College years are considered a very transformative time in the student’s life. It is a phase where academic knowledge meets personal growth and development. Leadership skills are probably the most valuable assets students can acquire during their college years. Not only will these skills propel individuals in life, but they will also shape future leaders. A very effective way of developing leadership skills in college is through participation in volunteer organisations and student-led activities.
Here’s how that plays out in shaping tomorrow’s leaders
Building teamwork and collaboration

Volunteer organisations provide outstanding opportunities for students to learn effective working relationships with a diversity of groups. The experience of leading or being part of such groups helps them understand how teamwork works. Whether it’s planning a community service or organising an awareness campaign, students learn that to be a successful leader they must have the ability to work in a team, delegate tasks, and listen to other viewpoints.
Developing communication skills
Good communication stands out as a characteristic of leadership. Many institutes place their students in tasks where the students need to put their ideas across in clear understandable terms to others. It’s through such an activity that empowers students to develop their public speaking, negotiating, and persuasion skills.
Developing problem-solving skills
Leadership is primarily seen as problem-solving. Volunteer activity provides students with experience in problems they are likely to encounter, which might include scarce resources, a poorly planned project, or interpersonal conflicts. It is through the process that problem-solving discussions and decisions provide students with the opportunity for critical thought and reasonable decision-making.

Encouraging initiative and responsibility
Joining a leadership role in an organisation further deepens a sense of ownership and responsibility. A student learns how to take initiative, set goals, and work on plans. It enhances his or her capabilities to lead by being responsible for successes and failures. It helps develop a growth mindset.
Network and mentorship opportunities
Mentorship and networking have a very high impact on leadership development. A college-goer by connecting with faculty members, and even alumni can be part of a mentorship programme leading to an environment of learning and development of leadership.
Leadership skills learnt during college days prepare students to cope with the requirements of professional life. When such activities are participated in, a student not only gives back to his community but also sets a foundation for being a confident, empathetic, and effective leader in the future.
