Early to bed and early to rise makes one healthy, wealthy and wise is what Dhanvi Sharma, class IV student at Apeejay School, Tanda Road swears by in her life. While she maintains that school has given her a big platform to exceed, her strength lies in following a well-structured time table that helps her balance her studies and practice for kickboxing extremely well.

As she continues to outshine under her mentor at school, Dhanvi’s dream is to take Indian kickboxing to International level someday.

Excerpts from the interview.

Who inspired you for kickboxing?

My mother inspired me for this sport. She has always encouraged me to participate in all sports activities at school from the start. Her constant support has always pushed me towards a positive approach in life.

How do you train for kickboxing?

I stay back in school and practice from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm daily. I have been practicing for the past two years. My coach at school, Yadvinder sir has helped me hone my techniques in kickboxing. He is a great mentor and role model for me. After that I come back home and practice again for one hour.

What is your favourite energy food?

I love to gorge on foxnuts (makhana) and cucumbers a lot. Apart from that I eat green vegetables and fruits. I always prefer homemade food over junk because it’s more nutritious.

How do you balance studies and sports practice?

I always prioritise both in equal manner. I focus on my studies well and later I start with my practice sessions that are held at the school premises. I wake up at 6 am daily and do some exercises at home and then get ready for school.

What drove you towards this sport?

It was actually my maternal uncle (mama) who introduced me to kickboxing. He would tell me about the sport and its rules. He is himself a Taekwondo player and has also participated in various district level championships.

Does kickboxing make you happy?

Yes, I feel innately happy and feel on top of the world when I am awarded medals and other achievements for kickboxing. Whenever I win some accolades and prizes for my school, it gives me a victorious feeling.
