Sports contribute to a well-rounded education, promoting physical and mental health, character development, social skills, and a variety of life skills that are invaluable for students in both their academic and personal lives. Hence, it is not surprising that schools and parents encourage their children to take a sport.

Off-late kickboxing has taken centrestage for several reasons. It can offer a range of benefits for students, both physical and mental. Kickboxing is a relatively new sport in India, but it has quickly gained popularity in recent years. There are now hundreds of kickboxing gyms and clubs across the country. Kickboxing is also becoming increasingly popular in schools.

One such student is Harshita Sharma, in class III at Apeejay School, Tanda Road, who secured a second position in the District Jalandhar Kickboxing Championship. In a candid interview, she says that her mother motivated her to take up this sport.

Tell us about yourself.

I have a great love for kickboxing. I also have a keen interest in the Hindi language. There is something nice about this language. When I read books in Hindi, the literary works transport me into another world.

When did you start practicing for kickboxing?

I began practicing kickboxing earlier this year, marking the start of my journey in this sport. It was my mother who inspired me to take up this sport. She has always supported me with my decisions. Hence, when I showed interest in kickboxing, she immediately encouraged me. Her support made me want to learn the techniques and master them.

What is your practice schedule for keeping up with your activity?

I attend kickboxing classes at an academy daily; dedicating a minimum of an hour-and-a-half with utmost dedication. I am well versed in all the techniques that have been taught to me till now. I made sure to prepare myself mentally at first. I have learnt front kick, back kick, push kick, side kick, and several other techniques in a short period.

Share a fond memory associated with the game.

More than a memory, I would like to share an experience. When I started practicing kickboxing at first, I was not that good at it at all. I struggled a lot to learn the techniques. However, with months of hard work and practice, I have become proficient enough to participate in competitions. This experience has taught me that focus and dedication is the key to success.

How do you manage your studies with sports?

When I am at school, I follow my studies very diligently. After school hours, I train with Yadwinder sir, the school coach. Once I am home, I complete my homework and manage to do some studies. After that, I go for another practice session at a nearby academy.

Advice for aspiring kickboxers?

Learning the correct kicking direction and form is crucial because having the right form is essential to avoid any shortcomings in your technique.
