Indian football received a significant boost in its development initiatives with the establishment of a premier talent harnessing academy dedicated by the legendary coach Arsene Wenger. Serving as FIFA’s global chief of football development, Wenger announced that the academy, named AIFF-FIFA Talent Academy, will be managed by the world governing body of football.
In collaboration with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Government of Odisha, the venture aims to focus on scouting talents at a young age and preparing players for future Indian teams. The formalisation of this partnership took place on November 21, 2023 through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey and R Vineel Krishna, state Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Sports and Youth Services.
Speaking to the media after the signing process, Wenger emphasised the importance of starting football training at a young age, stating that the academy’s goal is to identify and nurture talent from the age of five or six. He acknowledged India’s historical investment in education but stressed that football, unlike other professions, requires an early start for optimal development.
Wenger, renowned for his developmental contributions to Premier League side Arsenal, expressed FIFA’s commitment to educating children in India to help them reach their full potential. He highlighted the notion that no country has a moral right to be on top in world football and emphasised the role of education in shaping talented players.
The AIFF-FIFA Talent Academy, based in Bhubaneswar, at present, features two dedicated practice grounds with residential facilities for approximately 50 trainees. The academy’s head coach for the initial two years will be Spain’s Sergi Amezcua Fontrodona, with FIFA set to finalise a team of support staff to commence the training programme soon.
