In our journey of personal growth and development, values serve as the cornerstone upon which our character and identity are built. They are the principles and beliefs that guide our decisions, actions, and interactions with the world around us.
For students, who stand at the crossroads of shaping their future, compromising on values is akin to weakening the foundation of a promising life. In this article, we delve into the reasons why students can’t afford to compromise on their values and how these principles play a pivotal role in their holistic development.
The building blocks of character
Values are the building blocks of character because they shape the very essence of who we are. Just as a strong foundation is crucial for a tall building, values provide the framework upon which our personality, behaviour, and ethical compass are structured.
These principles define our core beliefs and establish the guidelines for how we respond to challenges, setbacks, and triumphs. Without a solid foundation of values, individuals may find themselves adrift, lacking a moral compass to navigate the complexities of life.
Determining priorities
Values play a pivotal role in helping individuals prioritize their actions and decisions. When students identify and embrace their values, they gain clarity about what truly matters to them. This clarity empowers them to make informed choices that are aligned with their principles, allowing them to allocate their time, energy, and resources to activities that resonate with their core beliefs. By knowing their values, students can avoid distractions and focus on pursuits that contribute to their personal growth and well-being.
According to Tejaswini Katdare, principal, Apeejay School, Kharghar, values are building blocks in a person’s life. “Your values are your beliefs which you think are important for the way you live or work. Values determine your priorities and deep down decide the way you want your life — they give direction in your life. Values also help us create a life which makes us feel good on the inside, not just looks good from the outside,” she opined.
Feeling good inside and outside
Embracing one’s values leads to a sense of inner harmony and well-being. When individuals act in alignment with their values, they experience a sense of authenticity and integrity. This congruence between beliefs and actions fosters a positive self-image and a genuine confidence that radiates outward.
People who uphold their values tend to attract like-minded individuals and opportunities, creating a virtuous cycle of positivity. Feeling good about oneself and the decisions made not only enhances mental and emotional health but also contributes to healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life.
Guiding behaviour in all aspects
Values act as guiding stars, steering individuals in various aspects of their lives. Whether in personal relationships, academic pursuits, or career choices, values provide a consistent framework for decision-making. For instance, a student who values honesty and integrity will be more likely to uphold academic honesty and maintain trustworthy relationships.
Similarly, a person who values empathy and compassion will approach conflicts and challenges with a more understanding and considerate perspective. In essence, values serve as a compass, ensuring that one’s actions align with their intentions.
Anita Yadav, principal, Apeejay School, Faridabad in Sector 15 says that it is the value system you inculcate during the student life that guides your behaviour in all aspects of life. “Even the National Education Policy 2020 advocates that education must build character and enable learners to be ethical, rational, compassionate and caring. Value education at Apeejay Schools is guided by the legendary presence of Founder-Chairman Dr Stya Paulji. His vision of value-based holistic education is palpable in the legacy of high ideals he leaves behind,” Yadav shared.
The hallmark of holistic education
You have to remember that value-based holistic education is essential for nurturing well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society. In this approach, education transcends academic learning and encompasses the development of moral and ethical principles. Such education instills values that emphasize empathy, respect, responsibility, and cultural sensitivity.
As students learn to navigate diverse perspectives and appreciate the importance of ethical conduct, they develop into socially conscious citizens who are equipped to make informed and responsible decisions. A value-based education goes beyond imparting knowledge; it shapes character, nurtures empathy, and fosters a sense of civic duty.
Remember that values are not mere words; they are the compass by which students navigate the journey of life. These principles act as the building blocks of character, shaping identity and behavior. They determine priorities, guide decisions, and promote a sense of authenticity and well-being. Value-based education is a hallmark of holistic growth, enabling individuals to develop into ethically grounded, socially responsible, and emotionally balanced individuals.
As students stand at the threshold of a world filled with choices and challenges, their values will serve as unwavering pillars, guiding them towards a future that aligns with their deepest beliefs and aspirations. Thus, compromising on values is not an option; it’s a compromise on one’s own potential for greatness.
Priti Wason, principal, Apeejay Svran Global School, Faridabad Sector 21-D concluded by saying that values help a person to distinguish between right and wrong. “Moral character formation is a crucial process that needs to start in infancy. Value-based education helps in mental conditioning and strengthens child’s determination to overcome tough conditions, challenges of life and adverse situations,” she opined.
