Unique birthday celebrations around the world

From China to Jamaica, each country celebrates the day with unique traditions

Happy Birthday! Bon anniversaire in French! Buon compleanno in Italian or   Gefeliciteerd in Dutch, birthday traditions around the world are exclusive for each country. If it’s said that there are countries that celebrate birthdays without cutting a cake, will you believe it? But there are some who believe in celebrating it differently.

1. In China, the celebration of birthdays takes a unique turn with the tradition of preparing Chang Shou Mian, or long-life noodles, instead of the conventional cake cutting. Symbolising longevity and happiness, these noodles are meant to be enjoyed without breaking them into smaller pieces during cooking, reinforcing the belief in a prosperous and lengthy life.

2. The neighbouring country Nepal follows a  lively yet slightly messy birthday custom. This is particularly popular among children. The coloured rice yogurt takes center stage as it is playfully smeared on the child’s forehead, believed to usher in good luck and robust health. While a birthday cake is a welcomed addition, the delightful yogurt tradition adds a colorful and enjoyable dimension to the celebration.

3. In Spain, birthday celebrations come with a unique twist – ear pulling. Much like the birthday bumps in Canada, the Spanish tradition involves having your ear tugged, with the number of tugs corresponding to your age. A 20-year-old may find themselves enduring 20 ear tugs, creating a playful and, at times, slightly uncomfortable birthday custom that may also be shared by other countries.

4. Jamaica boasts a distinct birthday tradition where the celebrant is covered entirely in flour at some point during their special day. Adding an extra layer of fun, it’s not uncommon for water to be tossed onto the birthday person first, ensuring that the flour adheres to them. This whimsical and messy tradition in Jamaica adds a playful touch to birthday festivities, making for a memorable and flour-filled celebration.

So, is your birthday coming next? Think, think what do you wish to do!
