Good sleep is essential for everyone. Proper sleep helps us wake up feeling fresh, energetic, and active, which is necessary for optimal daily functioning. This also applies to children. Adequate sleep enables children to concentrate, focus, study effectively, and retain information. Children typically require 10-12 hours of sleep, including naps, with a minimum of 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.

Nighttime is crucial for the body’s natural repair processes. During sleep, the brain organises the day’s experiences and thoughts. A child who lacks proper nighttime sleep may wake up frustrated, leading to a sour mood throughout the day. This can adversely affect their ability to learn and their overall performance in various aspects of school, including social, physical, emotional, and academic performance. Thus, sleep significantly contributes to a child’s growth and development.

To help a child establish a consistent sleep schedule:

1.       Set a bedtime around 9 pm. Avoid allowing gadgets at this time. Engage in a conversation with the child about their day or share stories about school or home experiences. Reading a story together can also be beneficial. These activities will create a soothing atmosphere, and your child is likely to fall asleep within 15-20 minutes.

2.       Dedicate around half an hour to this bedtime routine, even if it means sacrificing your own screen time. This investment in your child’s well-being will contribute to their happiness, health, and improved concentration in class, ultimately leading to their success.

In conclusion, prioritising healthy sleep habits for your child can have a positive impact on their overall development and achievements.
