Coming from a rural background near Pataudi in Haryana, Pankaj, an alumna of Apeejay Stya University’s (ASU) School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Batch 2015–19), has carved an inspiring path in higher education. Today, he is pursuing his PhD as a Research Scholar at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad. In this conversation, he reflects on his transformative years at Apeejay, the support he received, and the lessons that continue to guide his academic journey. Read edited excerpts:

How did your early days at Apeejay Stya University shape your confidence as a student?

In the beginning, I was slightly overwhelmed. Coming from a rural area, meeting peers with high board scores made me question whether I could keep up. But gradually, regular lectures, practical exposure, and the campus environment sharpened my skills. Living in the hostel, thanks to my parents’ insistence, was a turning point. It saved travel time. Our home was almost 70 km away and gave me space to grow personally. My parents always said, “You just focus on studies; we’ll handle the rest.” Their words gave me courage to move ahead.

Could you share some of the hands-on learning experiences that stood out for you?

The practical training was exceptional. I worked on instruments like the tablet compression machine and dissolution apparatus, and performed pharmaceutical chemistry experiments such as titrations and chemical reaction studies. These sessions strengthened my technical foundation. Later, I interned at Alkem Laboratories in Baddi, where I rotated across Production, Quality Control, Packaging, and Quality Assurance departments. This gave me a real taste of industry functioning.

What role did the faculty and administration play in your academic growth?

The faculty continuously motivated us to aim higher, especially towards research and higher education. Our Dean even remembered my name within days, which made me feel valued. The hostel warden and admin staff ensured a stress-free environment so we could focus on learning. It was a wholesome support system that really built my confidence.

How did Apeejay provide industry exposure during your course?

We had several seminars, guest lectures, and industrial visits. I still recall visiting Gracure in Bhiwadi, IPC in Ghaziabad, and the Apeejay Research Institute in Gurgaon. These visits helped us connect theory with real-world pharma practices.

What advice would you give to current students of pharmaceutical sciences?

Set a clear goal and remain consistent. No one studies 24/7, but when you do, avoid distractions like phones. With practice, your focus will improve and study hours will naturally increase. Also, never stop upgrading your skills – technology is advancing rapidly, and keeping up is essential to stay competitive.

Looking back, what do you value most about your journey at Apeejay?

Beyond academics, it’s the friendships and bonds that made student life unforgettable. Seniors like Uttam Singh guided me, and friends like Arghya, Mohit, and Sudhakar stood by me throughout. Apeejay gave me knowledge, but also a family-like network that continues to inspire me.
