‘The destroyer of darkness’: Poem by Anshul Rautaray, Apeejay School, Nerul

In heaven’s lavish dome,
We were all in God’s comfy home.
But then a demon pleased the lord,
Sought a boon and broke the peace chord!

Mahishasura was the devil’s name,
How well he played the cruel game!
Only a woman could finish his story,
Was his lame boon of glory.

Went to lord Shiva, all the gods depressed,
Who on his head wore a shining crest!
With Shiva’s advice, their powers they combined,
Created ten-handed Maa Durga, who would save mankind.

Shiva gave his trident, Vishnu his chakra,
Brahma his conch, Indra his bolt.
All the gods, bestowed her with weapons,
To kill the evil and free them from the devil.

Mounted on her lion, given by the lord of Himalayas,
Blowing her conch, she marched to hell!
Challenging the devil,
to beat her in his game of spell.

They fought for nine days and nine nights,
No one was ready to give up the mighty fight!
At last Maa Durga, pierced the devil’s chest,
With the silver trident, of the god who wore a crest!
