JEE aspirants’ three-attempt proposal is under consideration by the IIT Council

More than 12,000 aspirants have petitioned the Education Ministry, the IIT Council, and the Joint Admission Board (JAB) to review the attempt limit for JEE Advanced. They cite medical emergencies, family circumstances and examination stress as factors that can derail preparation and affect a candidate’s chances of getting into the IITs. As per media reports, the IIT Kanpur director claimed that the proposal is under consideration.

Under present rules, candidates may appear for JEE Advanced twice in two consecutive years, starting from the year they pass Class XII. They must also qualify through JEE Main and meet the other eligibility conditions.

The petitioners have proposed two alternatives: three attempts over three consecutive years or two attempts spread across a three-year window. They argue the latter would add flexibility without lowering the exam’s standards or guaranteeing anyone a seat.

The top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers are currently eligible for JEE Advanced. The students argue that the number of additional qualifiers should not be the only consideration. Any change would require authorities to assess its impact on exam administration and the existing admission process.

Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will soon start the application process for the JEE Main session one. Students are advised to check the official NTA website jeemain.nta.nic.in. As per dates shared by the Agency, the tentative exam dates are January 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, and 30, 2027.
