Beyond academic achievements, success in life is often measured by one’s ability to contribute positively to society and maintain healthy relationships. Human values lay the foundation for a fulfilling and successful life beyond academic or professional accomplishments.
Values like gratitude, resilience, and mindfulness contribute to the overall well-being and mental health of students. Human values contribute to the overall character development of individuals. Instilling values like honesty, integrity, empathy, and compassion helps shape students into well-rounded individuals with strong moral foundations.
Hence, institutes like Apeejay Education believe in the holistic development of its students. Each year, Apeejay Schools confer on their students the prestigious and coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values to those who exhibit the highest standards of honesty, humility, and integrity. Meet Shourya Rathore of class IX studying at Apeejay Svran Global School, Faridabad in Sector 21-D.
In an impromptu interview, he talks about what being human means to him.
How does it feel to receive this award?
I never thought that the test and the interview would go so well, especially after the interview with the principal. While I thought I was a good fit, I was not sure that I would receive this prestigious award. After all, there are so many other deserving students. However, when I was told that I would be the one getting the award, I was thrilled beyond words.
Were you aware of such awards being given, or did you only find out when you were nominated?
I learnt that such an award was given to students last year. A friend of mine was nominated. That is when I found out everything related to the award and Dr Stya Paul’s life. It made it easy for me when I was nominated by my teachers this year.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My hobbies include reading books — I’ve read about 25 books so far. I am interested in astronomy, cosmology, and space. I want to study this field as it fascinates me. I want to maybe someday go and visit NASA. I also have a keen interest in cricket.
What specifically interests you about cosmology and space?
After watching the movie Mission Mangal, I became intrigued by space and astronomy. The movie portrayed how one can contribute to the country through space exploration. I am fascinated by stars and planets, and how they move and behave. I want to be in a position where I can contribute to the success of my country in space research.
How have your parents contributed to instilling human values in you?
My mother has had a big role to play and always emphasised the importance of human values. She taught me to be kind, not be rude to adults, and be helpful whenever possible. These values were instilled in me by both my parents.
Teachers play a significant role. How have they contributed to your current position?
My teachers have taught me practical values and how to handle practical situations. They told me the importance of honesty and helping others. It is due to their efforts that I stand where I am today.
Is there something specific from Dr. Satya Paul’s life that inspires you?
Yes, there are so many things. But one aspect that stands out is Dr Satya Paul’s passion and commitment to whatever he did. He was not only a writer but also a freedom fighter. I learnt that being passionate about your pursuits is crucial.
In a materialistic world, how do you encourage others to help others?
I believe in karma. What you give comes back to you two-fold. Being selfless and helping others brings happiness and positive outcomes in the future. Encouraging others to do good and showing kindness leads to a better world.
How would you define being human?
Being human is about showing humanity, and embodying values like kindness and generosity. Without these values, one cannot truly be considered humane.
