Values like honesty, kindness, and respect define who we are as a person. Human values play an important role especially when it comes to shaping the quality of one’s life. A human can be a person, but to become humane requires a person to possess some special powers like embracing human values. Meet Nishtha Arora, a student of class VIII studying at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg.

In a candid interview, she talks about the essence of human values in one’s life and why everyone must possess them.

Excerpts from the interview

Tell us about yourself.

I enjoy outdoor activities and sports and am naturally talented in art and fashion. I’m always eager to take part in school events. My favourite subjects are Math and English. I’m someone who loves trying new things to figure out what I want to pursue.

What do you think human values are?

Human values are something that every person must possess. It is important to be honest and true to yourself. These fundamental virtues involve showing respect to elders, offering help to others, engaging in acts of charity, and prioritising honesty. It is widely acknowledged that honesty is the most commendable course of action. As much as they say, honesty is the best policy, we must apply it.

How did you react to receiving this award?

I was super shocked and my instant reaction was: ‘What! I am selected to achieve this prestigious award’? I was extremely happy and excited about it. It was indeed the most special moment in my life.

How do you plan to follow an act of human values outside your classroom?

I can make a difference by openly discussing these values with others. Just one person can inspire others. I think I can be that person. God has assisted us with so many great things in life, maybe more than we deserve. While we can’t repay it all, we can take a small step to help others. For instance, we can provide free education or give them books to encourage their learning in underprivileged children.

Tell us about who is your role model and why.

I would give all the credit to my parents for helping me shape who I am today. My role model and go-to person will always be my mother. She keeps on encouraging me to study well, and she teaches me how to become a good human being. My mother taught me something really valuable: When you succeed, don’t let it go to your head. Instead, be thankful for what you’ve accomplished and keep striving for better things. This is just the start of your journey, and I abide by her teachings.

Anything you would like to imbibe from Dr Stya Paul’s life?

Dr Stya Paul had many great qualities. One of them that I admire is his honesty. I also respect how much he cared about his country and how selfless he was. While I know it’s tough to be like him, I want to imbibe his honesty and love for his nation.

What are the criteria for getting nominated for such a prestigious award?

It all depends on integrating good human values. Once you have started with it naturally, then you are halfway there. These values have grown in me through the influence of my elders. For example, I’ve always been kind to others, like greeting a teacher in the school hallway, helping my friends complete their homework when needed, and much more. All in all, just be yourself and be a good person. Remember, your actions won’t go unnoticed.
