Like any generation, Gen Z has its unique characteristics and values shaped by the social, economic, and technological environment in which they grew up. As a result, many Gen Z individuals prioritise inclusivity, equality, and advocating for social justice issues. Kindness, compassion, empathy, and community service are some of the traits they imbibe.

Therefore, to recognise the significance of these human values, Apeejay’s Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, a much-coveted and prestigious award, is given annually to select students of Apeejay for imbibing core human values and diligently practicing them in life through actions, behaviour, and conduct.

Let us meet one student — Seher Malhotra of class X at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar. In a candid interview, she talks about how her mother has been a great inspiration for her.

How and when did you win the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values?

I won the award when I was in class VIII — in 2021. Back then the classes were still online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The class teacher called me and told me that I had been nominated for this award. I was a bit shocked when I was told that it is a highly coveted award given to a select few only once in their school/college time.

What was the selection process?

The meeting with four administrators including principal sir happened on Zoom. There were other interviews slotted and I had to wait for two hours before it was my turn to answer the questions. They asked me about my career plans, what I like doing, my hobbies, and what I am studying. But mostly it was principal sir, who was telling the other panelists about my achievements.

What preparation did you do?

I had only three-four days to prepare. I was a bit nervous and had jitters. But once the interview began, I was okay and freely answered what was asked of me with confidence.

Can you tell us a little about those achievements?

Since I joined the school in the nursery, I have been participating in many competitions like poem recitations and even debates. I also enjoy writing; I have participated in dance competitions and play chess as well. I am on the school team and won competitions. I also participated in the Punjab Kesari competition where I got third prize.

Have you heard about these awards?

While I had heard about Dr Stya Paul and his contribution to education and how he is the Founder-Chairman of Apeejay, I had not heard of the awards. So, when I was nominated, I asked my teacher what I should expect at the interview. She told me that it was an honour to even be nominated but didn’t know what questions would be asked. So, during the interview, I was very candid with my answers.

How would you define human values?

Human values to me mean being kind to everyone; never bullying anyone. You must always show compassion for others because you don’t know what their situation is like. Never judge a person on their appearance or looks; never make fun of someone because they have made a mistake in life. Never pass judgment on others without knowing the truth. Be nice to people, especially if they are having a bad day, it can make them smile and lighten their load.

Is it tough to live by these values?

It is not easy. These days, it’s hard to even make friends let alone have good friends. You have fair-weather friends who come to you because they need something like notes, or help during exam time. I have been lucky that I have some good friends who genuinely care about me and vice-versa.

How do you manage your studies and extracurricular activities?

I have been at Apeejay since nursery. So, a lot of the teachers have known me since I was a toddler. They have been extremely supportive in all my endeavours. Also, I have believed in devotedly being respectful of my teachers; I have never done anything rebellious, or been disobedient and caused trouble. I am a good student and stand up for my classmates whenever required. I think winning this prestigious award is a consequence of my courteous and gracious behaviour towards others.

Who would you credit this achievement to?

The whole credit goes to my parents, especially my mother, for raising me to be a genuinely good and considerate human being. The teachers have played a huge role as well. You get to learn so many things from every person there is in your life. You get to adapt their good qualities and how they like to manage things during difficult times. My teachers have had a huge role in my winning this award.
