Values like empathy and tolerance are essential for resolving conflicts. Students who understand and practice these values are better equipped to handle disagreements and disputes constructively, which is essential for personal and societal peace. Incorporating human values into education helps students not only academically but also in becoming responsible, compassionate, and ethical members of society. These values serve as a guiding compass, influencing their choices and behavior in various aspects of life.

Hence, each year, Apeejay Education awards the prestigious Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values to students who exhibit humility and integrity. Meet one such recipient of the coveted award – Dev Suri, a student of class XI at Apeejay School, Faridabad in Sector 15.

In an impromptu interview, this 93 percentiler talks about how unexpected this award was.

Were you expecting to get this award?

Not at all. There were a few other students who I thought were more deserving. I was sure that the student who was from class XII would get it. But when my name was called out, I was thrilled. It came out of the blue.

Tell us about yourself.

I have taken up PCM. I scored 93 per cent in the Boards. I would not say that it is a great score but it was good enough for me to get Science which I wanted. I don’t particularly want to pursue engineering. But coding interests me; so maybe I will end up doing something in AI since everyone is talking about it.

How would you define human values or what do human values mean to you?

Human values are something that defines a person. Values like honesty, empathy, and being kind to others are something that everyone must have. These values are of utmost importance and those who have them, are good people. Kindness, honesty, integrity, perseverance, helping others, and being selfless are some of the values that all of us should have.

One aspect of Dr Satya Paul that inspires you.

What inspires me is that he was a true ‘Karma Yogi’. He always put work before himself, and that’s admirable.

Do you think it’s tough to exhibit or inculcate these human values in your life?

I think this depends from person to person. Imbibing these values is not tough for me. It could be because it just comes naturally to me. My family, especially my father, instilled these values in me since I was a toddler.

What charity work are you associated with?

There is a centre, where people who have a skin disease – leprosy — that my father visits regularly. He donates food and other essentials. I accompany my father. Looking at the people there, I am privileged to have a good school, three square meals, and loving parents.

What role have your teachers and parents played in inculcating these values in you?

Teachers have played a significant role in instilling values like helping friends in times of trouble. They’ve taught me to be there for others, especially during exams when stress is high. From my parents, I have learnt to be punctual. It is one significant value my father has instilled in me. He regularly checks on his work even on Sundays, and I follow suit with my schoolwork.

Do you have any suggestions for acts of kindness?

The easiest way to help is to go to a slum area and assist students in their learning process, like teaching them English words that will benefit them in the future. I’m part of the school’s Interact Club, and we plan to organise some events shortly.

How do you think human values will help you in your professional journey?

Human values will be essential in my professional life. Being punctual, helpful, and considerate will lead to a fulfilling career.
