India has a long and diverse history of philosophical thought, with various schools of philosophy emphasizing the importance of ethics and morality. Philosophical traditions like Vedanta, Buddhism, Jainism, and others have explored the nature of human values and their role in leading a meaningful life.

Therefore, parents in India instill human values in their children for a range of cultural, religious, social, and personal reasons. These values are considered essential for the well-rounded development and success of their children, as well as for the preservation of cultural and traditional heritage. Another reason is that in a rapidly changing world, parents, as elsewhere, want to equip their children with the skills and values needed to adapt to and succeed in the future. Values such as adaptability, resilience, and empathy are considered important in this context.

Therefore, Apeejay Education is committed to the holistic development of students and ensures that they become ethical human beings with the highest standards of honesty, humility, and integrity. The students who personify and exhibit these values in their daily lives are awarded the prestigious and coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.

Meet one such recipient of the award – Jasraj Kararia – of class XII at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi. In an impromptu interview, this Science (medical) stream student talks about how discipline and honesty are the best virtues.

What was your reaction when you got the award?

I felt very good and am very grateful to God and my parents who made me who I am today. It was exhilarating to have got this prestigious award. This award is all the more precious since I have been nominated for it a couple of times before.

So what do you want to do?

I aspire to be a doctor. I believe that being a doctor allows me to serve society and help people in need, which is something that feels good and right. I aim to work in a government role where I can provide free services to those in need, thus aligning with my service-oriented mindset.

What did you do differently this time to win the award?

I believe I have matured and learned how to answer questions correctly with age. My writing has also improved with time. I think I have become more confident and this is reflected in my answers as well.

How would you define human values, and what do they mean to you?

Human values are the principles that guide our lives, ideally making us better. I subscribe to values like discipline and honesty. These values are important as they help me get things done correctly.

How tough is it to be honest in today’s world, and how do you follow it?

Being honest can be challenging in today’s world, but I try to be honest with myself first, acknowledging my shortcomings. I also strive to be honest with others, though there may be situations where some level of discretion is needed for the greater good.

How do you think these values will help you in your profession as a doctor?

Discipline and honesty are essential in every profession, and as a doctor, these values will set an example for others and help me serve with a genuine service mindset.

What role have your parents played in helping you get this award?

My parents have been crucial in shaping who I am today, as our childhood experiences and upbringing influence our paths in life.

If you had to suggest one act of kindness, what would it be?

I believe people should do charity work at various levels, giving back in ways they can. Additionally, understanding others’ opinions and broadening our horizons can help create harmony in our communities.
