We live in a competitive world and having an edge over others is crucial. Human values contribute to the holistic development of an individual, shaping their character and personality. They instill qualities such as honesty, integrity, compassion, and responsibility, which are essential for building a strong foundation of moral and ethical conduct. Did you know that students with a strong foundation in human values tend to develop better social skills? Respect, empathy, and cooperation are vital for effective collaboration and teamwork, which are often required in competitive academic and professional environments.

Human values also play a significant role in shaping leadership qualities. Leaders with a sense of responsibility, fairness, and a commitment to the well-being of others are more likely to succeed and inspire others in competitive scenarios. Therefore, institutes like Apeejay Education each year confer on their students the prestigious and coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values to those who exhibit the highest standards of honesty, humility, and integrity.

One such student is Parth Agarwal of class VIII at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview, he talks about how his grandfather was instrumental in instilling human values.

Tell us about yourself.

My hobbies include playing cricket, swimming, doing karate, skating, and playing the guitar and violin. I have three classes in a week, one for guitar and violin, and the other for cricket and swimming, an activity that is reserved for the summer months. We have a club where I live and go there.

Were you expecting to get this award?

I had my doubts. I was only 60 per cent convinced that I may get this prestigious award. So when I got to know that I had been selected, I was extremely happy and a bit surprised as well. I am very thankful to the school, my grandfather, and also to God for making this happen.

What role your parents and teachers have played in making you who you are today?

The teachers and the school have been like pillars for my overall development, teaching me human values. At home, my parents emphasise these aspects and encourage me to be a good citizen along with being a good student.

What is the most important human value for you?

Being a responsible citizen, being heroic, and being a truth seeker are important values for me. This is because everyone needs to be awakened in this modern generation.

Were you aware of these awards before you were nominated?

I had only heard about this award in passing. I was not aware of what the entire process entailed. It was only once I was nominated did I come to know that there would be a written test followed by an interview. Once I was through the written test, I was a bit nervous when it came to giving answers in front of the school principal. Some of the questions asked were: Why should I be given the human values award and about Dr Satya Paul’s life?

What inspires you the most from Dr Stya Paul’s life?

I think his entire life and the way he led is inspiring. But to be specific, his truthfulness, sincerity, dedication, and soaring high inspires me a lot.

How would you define being human?

Being honest, having integrity, humility, and discipline are important traits that every person must have and inculcate. These are simple values that each one of us must abide by.

Are you part of some charity work?

I would not say charity work but my parents and I are associated with Akshardham Temple, focusing on human values. I attend their fortnightly programmes where they teach about the teachings of God and Swaminarayanji. It’s because of my grandfather’s dedication to the temple that I got interested, and I regularly attend these sessions.

I also volunteer, especially on special days like birthdays at the temple. I do whatever is required on that particular day.
