Doodhpathri, situated about 45 kilometers away from Srinagar, is renowned for its untouched beauty, earning its place as a must-visit destination on any offbeat Kashmir itinerary. During our visit in March, the valley was adorned with fresh snowfall, attracting numerous tourists from Srinagar for day trips. However, we were fortunate to experience the tranquility of the valley after the day-trippers departed in the late afternoon and before the next influx of tourists arrived the following morning.

Named the ‘Valley of Milk,’ Doodhpathri derives its name from the Shaliganga and Sukhnag rivers that flow through the valley, their swift currents creating a milky appearance as they cascade against the rocks. Accessible via a winding road approximately 4 kilometers from the parking area, visitors have the option to either walk or take a pony ride. As guests of the JKTDC Resort, we were granted permission to drive our car to the valley’s edge, sparing us a lengthy trek.

Despite visiting in mid-March, the valley remained blanketed in snow, offering opportunities for skiing, sledding, and ATV rides. Venturing away from the bustling tourist spots, we embarked on a hike towards the Dikshal trail, ascending steep hills to reach a vast, snow-covered meadow. Here, amidst towering pine and deodar trees, we indulged in snow activities, spending hours frolicking in the pristine surroundings.Doodhpathri boasts several hiking trails, accessible either by pony or on foot. Our accommodation at the JKTDC Resort provided a unique experience in an igloo cottage, surrounded by snow that shimmered under the moonlight. Despite its lesser-known status compared to Gulmarg and Sonmarg, Doodhpathri’s charm rivals that of its more famous counterparts, making it a hidden gem worth exploring for those seeking serenity amidst nature’s splendor.
