Acne, breakouts, dry and irritated skin, or heat rashes are common skin issues during the summer season. Meenal Sandhu, Assistant Professor, Department of Fashion Makeover, Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), says, “Imbalanced skin type is one of the major issues that teenagers grapple with. Unhealthy eating habits and a lack of a good skincare routine can result in skin issues during summer.” She recommends the following tips to maintain good skin during the summer season.
Skincare routine
A good skincare routine includes cleansing, toning, moisturising, and sun protection factor (SPF). “Not every teenager has acne-prone skin so the first step for them would be to analyse their skin type. In the case of dry skin, one should use a good hydrating cream to overcome dryness. For oily skin, use products with a formulation that does not contain much oil. Most importantly, they should never forget to apply SPF because the tanning one gets at this age is difficult to correct,” the professor advises.

Apart from this, exfoliating or scrubbing the skin once a week is a must for dry or combination skin. For oily skin, on the other hand, use products containing salicylic acid, which exfoliates the skin and clears the pores, thereby preventing acne.
“While many teenagers follow a good skincare routine during the day, they tend to ignore a good nighttime routine. Our skin undergoes repair at night. So, they must clean their skin and apply a good moisturiser before going to bed. They should also include SPF in the nighttime skincare routine to protect their skin from the harmful UV rays emitted by mobile phones,” the cosmetology expert adds.
Home remedies
For dry and combination skin, one can apply raw milk, recommends the Apeejay professor. Milk contains lactic acid, which helps in fading out marks and pigmentation. Those with oily skin can use tomato or lemon to clean the pores and control the release of sebum, an oily substance produced in the sebaceous glands.
Follow a healthy lifestyle
An unhealthy lifestyle can result in blemishes and worsen acne. “Teenagers must follow a healthy and balanced diet and do exercises like yoga to relieve stress. Plenty of water intake is a must,” she emphasises.
