In today’s fast-paced digital age, maintaining sustained attention has become increasingly challenging for children. Shortened attention spans can affect academic performance, social development, and emotional well-being. Schools and colleges have a vital role to play in fostering environments and adopting practices that promote better concentration and focus among students.
Sharing some valuable insight on to how to consistently improve attention, Ms Namita Vinayak Mer, School Counsellorar at Apeejay School, Nerul says,
“Focus and attention span play a vital role in a child’s overall development. As caregivers and educators, it’s important to give clear, age-appropriate instructions, reduce distractions, and break tasks into smaller steps. Incorporating interactive games, role plays, and regular breaks fosters better engagement, while physical activities helps children direct their energy positively and productively.”
“A balanced healthy diet, adequate sleep, and limited screen time also support cognitive growth, helping children build stronger focus in a healthy, holistic way,” Ms Mer added.
Here are key strategies to enhance attention span in children:
1. Structured Routine and Clear Instructions
Children thrive in predictable environments. Schools can maintain structured routines and give clear, concise instructions. Breaking lessons into small, manageable segments helps prevent cognitive overload and keeps students engaged.
2. Active Learning Techniques
Incorporate hands-on activities, role plays, group discussions, and interactive tools to make learning more engaging. For colleges, project-based learning and real-world applications help maintain sustained attention through relevance and interest.

3. Mindfulness and Meditation
Introducing brief mindfulness exercises such as deep breathing, guided imagery, or meditation at the start of the day or class can calm the mind and improve focus. Schools can adopt programs like “Mindful Mondays” or short daily reflection periods.
4. Reduce Distractions
Classrooms should be free of unnecessary visual and auditory distractions. Seating arrangements, noise control, and decluttered spaces help students concentrate better. For older students, phone-free zones and app blockers during study hours can aid concentration.
5. Frequent Breaks and Physical Activity
Short breaks during long study sessions re-energise the brain. Movement-based breaks, yoga sessions, or even a quick walk can improve mental clarity and attention span in both school and college settings.
6. Healthy Lifestyle Habits
Schools and colleges must encourage proper sleep hygiene, nutritious diets, and hydration. Workshops on screen-time management and healthy lifestyle choices can equip students with tools to enhance cognitive performance.

7. Incorporate Visual Aids
Using charts, infographics, animations, and mind maps makes abstract concepts more engaging and easier to understand, helping students stay attentive.
8. Celebrate Progress
Positive reinforcement through praise, certificates, or shout-outs boosts morale and motivates students to stay focused and try harder.
