Screen time vs green time: Finding balance for young minds

Discovering harmony between technology and nature in childhood

In a world where screens have become constant companions, experts and educators are advocating for a healthier balance between digital engagement and time spent in nature.

From online classes and educational apps to social media and gaming, screens are deeply woven into the daily lives of children and teenagers. While technology has opened doors to learning, creativity, and connectivity, excessive screen time is increasingly raising concerns about its impact on physical health, mental well-being, and social development.

Today’s young minds are growing up in a digital-first world. A few taps on a screen can provide answers, entertainment, and interaction. However, as hours spent indoors continue to rise, many children are spending less time outdoors than previous generations. This shift has sparked an important conversation: how can we strike a balance between screen time and green time?

“Green time” refers to the time spent outdoors in natural environments such as parks, gardens, playgrounds, forests, or even a simple walk in the neighbourhood. Studies have consistently shown that exposure to nature helps reduce stress, improve concentration, enhance mood, and encourage physical activity. Children who regularly engage with nature often display better emotional regulation, stronger social skills, and improved overall well-being.

On the other hand, excessive screen use can contribute to eye strain, poor posture, disrupted sleep patterns, and reduced attention spans. Constant notifications and digital stimulation may also leave young minds feeling overwhelmed and mentally fatigued.

The solution is not to eliminate screens but to use them mindfully. Technology remains an essential tool for learning and growth. The goal is to create a healthy balance where digital experiences complement, rather than replace, real-world exploration.

Simple Ways to Create Balance

  • Encourage at least an hour of outdoor play every day.
  • Schedule screen-free family time.
  • Promote hobbies such as gardening, cycling, reading, or sports.
  • Use technology purposefully rather than habitually.
  • Take regular breaks during extended screen use.
  • Organise nature walks, outdoor projects, and community activities.

Schools, too, have an important role to play. Apeejay Schools ensure to take students on excursion trips as a part of experiential learning.  Outdoor learning experiences, environmental initiatives, sports programmes, and experiential activities can help students reconnect with the world beyond their screens.

“Screens can teach, entertain, and connect children, but nothing replaces the joy of running, exploring, and playing outdoors. A little screen time is fine, but a little more green time helps children stay active, creative, and happy. The goal isn’t to choose one over the other—it’s to find the right balance. After all, the best childhood memories are made both on screens and under open skies” shares Ms Nidhi Ghai, School incharge, Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld, Jalandhar.

As technology continues to evolve, the challenge is not choosing between screens and nature but ensuring that both have a meaningful place in children’s lives. After all, while screens can expand horizons, it is often the green spaces around us that help young minds grow, reflect, and truly thrive.
