Lab work is part and parcel of the school curriculum, especially if you are in higher classes like class X and above. While it is important to know the common mistakes that, as a student, you have to avoid, it is equally imperative to know the safety protocols to adhere to. The enforcement of safety protocols in school laboratories is fundamental not only for preventing accidents and ensuring legal compliance but also for fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth.

Remember, labs are equipped with chemicals, biological specimens, and equipment that can pose risks like chemical burns, exposure to hazardous substances, or physical injuries from improper handling of apparatus. Strict adherence to safety protocols helps minimize the risk of these accidents.

Dr Seema Sharma, Head of Chemistry at Apeejay School, Noida, said: “Chemistry lab serves as a gateway to scientific discovery, offering thrilling adventures that demand preparation and caution. The students must navigate the lab environment with precision and safety in mind.”

Mixing chemicals haphazardly can trigger unexpected reactions and jeopardise safety, she stressed. “The students should be meticulous label readers, ensuring they use separate containers for each chemical and verify labels before use,” the educator advised and shared a few more safety measures that students must follow.

Precision in Measurement: Experiment success hinges on accurate measurements. Students must be encouraged to master the use of graduated cylinders, pipettes, and balances for precise quantification.

Clear Labeling: Mislabeling samples can lead to confusion and errors. Emphasize the importance of clear and detailed labeling on all glassware and containers used during experiments.

Adherence to Procedures: Skipping steps or improvising procedures can compromise results and pose safety risks. Stress the importance of following protocols meticulously for reliable outcomes.

PPE Awareness: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like goggles, gloves, and lab coats are indispensable safety barriers. “It is necessary to remind students that wearing PPE is non-negotiable as it is for their protection,” Dr Sharma stressed.

She also said that it is necessary to familiarise students with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to understand chemical properties and potential hazards before starting experiments. “Ensure students work in well-ventilated areas to mitigate risks from harmful fumes generated by certain chemicals. Third, emphasise that chemicals should only be identified by labels, not by taste or smell, to prevent accidents.

“Fourth, strictly prohibit food and drinks in the lab to prevent contamination and accidental ingestion. Fifth, equip students with spill response training and kits for minor spills while emphasising the immediate reporting of larger spills to instructors. Last, familiarise students with emergency exits, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment for prompt response in case of emergencies,” Dr Sharma said.

Apart from all the above-mentioned safety points, good lab hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing must be done to minimise contamination risks, Dr Sharma opined.

“By steering clear of common mistakes and prioritising safety protocols, students can emerge as confident and responsible champions in the chemistry lab. A strong safety foundation empowers students to shape the future of scientific discovery responsibly,” Dr Sharma said in conclusion.
