Jasmilan Kaur from Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) is a brilliant writer. She has inculcated this art for writing articles and poems from her grandfather, who has been writing beautiful poems since his early 20s.  She proudly narrates that her grandfather’s literary works include poetry written for Jasmilan’s grandmother, on nature as well as on freedom fighters during the Independence. “I grew up reading all his poems and articles. They have inspired me a lot and it’s his constant support and love which motivates me to write my thoughts down,” the young writer says.

Currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Applications, Jasmilan also prefers reading self-help books during her free time as she believes that one can only write good pieces, only if he/she reads good articles. “I prefer reading books during the sunset as I consider it one of the best times of the day to spend on oneself under the grasp of nature’s beauty,” she explains.

In this week’s Scholar-Journalist series, the budding writer explains how writing gives her a sense of satisfaction and more.

Read edited excerpts:

How does writing give you a sense of satisfaction or happiness?

According to human psychology, one can’t always speak out what’s in her/his mind so she/he sits down to write it all. Similarly at times when I am overwhelmed by anything in my life, I open my journal and write down all my thoughts. Sometimes it turns out to be a poem, sometimes a short story, but the end result is always the same – a beautiful piece of art!

And when I see the result, I feel so proud of myself to jot down more of my thoughts in a mesmerising way. It’s simple that when you do something wholeheartedly, it provides you satisfaction. Thus writing to me provides a sense of satisfaction and happiness.

Why did you decide to write on this topic ‘ Threads Vs Twitter’?

Since it was raining a lot in the North, I wasn’t stepping out of my home. But the writer within me couldn’t hold so long to not write something. So I sat down and thought of something that I can write about. That was when I got a notification from the Threads app which gave me the spark to write and talk about the most important discussion which had been going around all over social media platforms – Threads vs Twitter.

As this wasn’t something overwhelming but more of a research article so, I had to first research about both the applications and write down accordingly.

Are you using these social media platforms? Which according to you is better?

In this techno-savvy world, we get to see new applications or updates of old applications on a daily basis. Some of them are pretty useful while some aren’t. I have been using Twitter for a long time now and I have been posting tweets too. According to me, Twitter is very entertaining and one of the quickest applications to get news on. Talk about humour, Twitter has it all. Talk about latest trolls, trending sections, says it all. Most of the time I get to know if Instagram or Spotify or any other application has its server down through Twitter. And ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter, it’s been pretty crazy!

On the other hand, I have even started using Thread. But since it’s pretty new it requires a lot of user adaptive changes. Therefore, I prefer Twitter over Threads for now.

What kind of articles/books do you like to read and write? When do you usually write – day or night?

As a kid, I was first introduced to the Harry Potter Series, obviously, which made me fall for more such fantasy books. But as I grew up I wanted to know myself better and groom myself into a better personality. Thus, I started reading self-help and motivational books. These books have helped me alot in many ways in the past years. To call my favourites those would be: 101 Essays that will change the way you think, Atomic Habits, You Can Heal Yourself. All of these books talk about how one should live a life happily and enjoy every moment of it – be it bad or good.

As I spoke about how sunset is actually the ‘GOLDEN HOUR’, I get ecstatic upon seeing the various colours of orange and yellow which inspires me to write beautiful thoughts. Thus, I prefer writing in the evening.

How do you think research plays a role in your writing journey?

Research plays a crucial role in writing. Not just that, I love to learn new things so I keep researching about the most random stuff on the internet. But one should wisely pick articles to read because the internet can be dangerous as well in terms of the kind of information being shared. Thus, I always check the facts from trusted sources before writing about it.

Your key learnings so far in this writing journey?

Writing, according to me, comes with a lot of learning as one gets to upgrade their vocabulary and it also changes the perspective of viewing even little things in life in a very different way. Writing also enhances language diversity as one gets to dig deep in a particular language and curate beautiful lines from it.

What are your future plans? Do you aspire to become a writer?

During my summer break I worked as a Content Writer for a company and I totally enjoyed writing new articles. But I don’t think I will take this as my main stream occupation as I love to write poems related to my daily moments and keep it close to my heart. But I am sure I won’t stop writing.
