In today’s highly connected world, effective communication has become an indispensable skill. As we frequently interact and collaborate with people from different backgrounds and ethnicities, the ability to speak confidently and articulately has become essential. Recognising the significance of this skill, educational institutions are placing a strong emphasis on teaching children the art of public speaking.

Shalini Fate, a Primary Years Programme (PYP) coordinator at Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, emphasises the importance of public speaking, stating, “Having good speaking skills is essential. It not only boosts one’s confidence but also helps convey thoughts and ideas with clarity. Students who master the art of speaking well will do well in their career as these skills will help them enhance their persuasion power, leadership skills, and ability to easily connect with people thus building good relationships.”

The benefits of mastering public speaking extend beyond the classroom, as these skills play a crucial role in shaping a child’s future.

One key advantage of public speaking is its ability to enhance persuasion power. The ability to clearly articulate thoughts and ideas influences how others perceive and respond to them. Whether in school debates, presentations, or future professional endeavours, children who have mastered public speaking can effectively convey their opinions and persuade others to their point of view.

Furthermore, public speaking nurtures leadership skills. Leaders are often required to address a group, inspire others, and motivate their team. By learning how to speak confidently in public, children develop the necessary skills to become effective leaders in various domains. They learn to command attention, project authority, and inspire others through their words.

Additionally, public speaking facilitates the development of strong interpersonal skills. The ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds is an asset in today’s globalised society. Effective communication creates a bridge between individuals, fostering understanding and building strong relationships. By mastering public speaking, children can easily connect with others, leading to a broader network of contacts and opportunities.

To help children excel in public speaking, here are a few tips:

Practice, Practice, Practice: Encourage children to practise regularly to build confidence and fluency. They can rehearse speeches, participate in debates, or engage in impromptu speaking exercises.

Focus on Clarity and Body Language: Emphasise the importance of clear and concise speech, while also paying attention to non-verbal cues such as gestures, eye contact, and posture. These elements contribute to effective communication.

Learn from Role Models: Encourage children to observe and learn from skilled public speakers. Watching TED Talks or attending live presentations can provide inspiration and serve as a valuable learning experience.

Seek Constructive Feedback: Encourage children to seek feedback from teachers, peers, or mentors. Constructive criticism helps identify areas for improvement and allows for continuous growth.

Emphasise Content Preparation: Teach children to research and organise their thoughts effectively. Emphasise the importance of structuring speeches and presentations logically to deliver a compelling message.
