Patriotism: A manifestation of love and respect for one’s country

Patriotism is the profound expression of love and respect for one’s country. Often referred to as our motherland, this term conveys a depth of affection for our country akin to the love we hold for our mothers. Similar to our mothers, our country nurtures and facilitates our growth. Patriotism naturally develops, mirroring the love we feel for our families, and plays a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s culture and historical heritage.

For today’s youth, patriotism is cultivated through experiences with events like Independence Day, Republic Day, and by watching patriotic movies. This sense of belonging and patriotism becomes particularly pronounced during times of war. Despite the diversity within India—divided by states, languages, and religions—the nation stands united in times of crisis. Every soldier sacrificing their life in war doesn’t represent a specific state but rather exemplifies an Indian fighting for the sovereignty and pride of our great nation.

Reflecting on the famous quote by American President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country,” patriotism extends beyond merely being a soldier in a war. It encompasses a broader sense of civic duty. A true patriot is one who not only defends the country in times of conflict but also remains vigilant on issues like poverty, unemployment, corruption, illiteracy, and terrorism. As the youth, our role is to move beyond mere complaints about the flaws in our government and actively contribute to the growth and development of our nation. Being the change is the first step toward bringing about the change we desire.
