Musculoskeletal conditions exacerbate by the unique challenges posed by the weather. Check out prevention tips

The monsoon season certainly brings relief from the scorching heat. However, on the contrary, it also increases the risk of certain musculoskeletal problems or orthopedic conditions. The damp and slippery conditions, along with the prevalence of infections, can contribute to various musculoskeletal issues.

Sharing his views Dr Neeraj Katyal, Assistant Professor and HOD, Department of Physiotherapy highlights, “Monsoon season is characterised by increased humidity and change in atmospheric pressure and temperature, which is the main reason for the pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Most common musculoskeletal problems encountered are arthritic pain in the knee, neck and back area. This season has an impact on patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.”

Moreover, individuals with pre-existing conditions like spondylitis may experience worsened back pain in humid weather. Let’s look at in detail some of the musculoskeletal problems during monsoon season:

Infectious arthritis: Monsoons create a favorable environment for bacterial and fungal infections. Infections can lead to infectious arthritis, causing joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Maintaining proper hygiene, avoiding stagnant water, and wearing protective clothing can reduce the risk of infection. If joint symptoms occur, consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which may include antibiotics or antifungal medications.

Back pain: The increased humidity during monsoons can exacerbate back pain, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions like spondylitis or disc problems. To manage back pain, practice good posture, avoid sitting or standing for prolonged periods, use ergonomic furniture, and engage in gentle exercises that strengthen the core muscles.

Sprains and strains: The slippery surfaces during monsoons make individuals prone to slips and falls, resulting in sprains or strains. Twisting an ankle or overexerting a muscle can lead to pain, swelling, and limited mobility. To prevent these injuries, wear proper footwear with good grip, be cautious on wet surfaces, and maintain balance while walking. Applying ice and resting the affected area can help manage the symptoms.

Fractures: Accidents during monsoons can result in fractures, especially in areas with high rainfall and waterlogged streets. Fractures can occur due to slips, falls, or vehicular accidents. It is crucial to exercise caution and be mindful of your surroundings. If a fracture occurs, immobilise the affected area, seek immediate medical attention, and follow the recommended treatment plan.

Thus, prevention plays a crucial role in managing orthopedic conditions during monsoons. Dr Katyal explains various ways to treat these discomforts. Some of them include applying cold or hot compress and staying physically active. Applying hot or cold compresses along with massage to the joints relieve the pain from sore muscles and also, enhances blood circulation which counteract the thickening of blood which occurs due to high humidity. Staying physically active by doing any type of exercises like aerobics, yoga, pilates, etc. helps in providing joints and muscles with strength and endurance hence, preventing pain and stiffness. Lastly, if the pain is extreme, the best way to prevent and treat these discomforts is by consulting a physiotherapist,” he concludes.
