In the age of information, understanding how knowledge is organized in the mind is crucial for effective learning. One powerful tool used in psychology and education is the semantic network. It is a visual or conceptual representation of knowledge, where ideas, concepts, or words are connected in a network of relationships. Think of it as a mind map that shows how one concept links to another, helping learners understand meaning through connections rather than isolated facts.
The importance of semantic networks lies in the way our brains store and retrieve information. When students learn new concepts, they do not store them randomly; instead, concepts are linked with prior knowledge in meaningful ways. It mimics natural organisation, making it easier for students to recall information, understand relationships, and apply knowledge creatively. For teachers, this means lessons can be structured around connected ideas rather than just rote memorization, fostering deeper comprehension.
According to Ms Sakshai Nagpal, Educator and School Counsellor at Apeejay School, Noida, “In classrooms, teachers use concept maps to show relationships between topics, for instance, linking plants to photosynthesis, leaves, sunlight, and growth. In reading comprehension, semantic networks help children connect new vocabulary with known words, improving understanding and retention.”

The educator further suggested that, semantic networks can be used in several practical ways to enhance learning:
