Knowing your primary teacher, or the teacher who first introduced you to formal education, can have significant implications. The primary teacher plays a crucial role in shaping early educational experiences and laying the foundation for the kids’ learning journey. They introduce you to fundamental concepts, skills, and subjects, which form the basis for further learning. Establishing a strong educational foundation in the early years is vital for academic success in later stages.

Teaching has always been her passion. “I have a natural inclination towards working with children and helping them learn and grow. Even when I was a student myself, I used to enjoy explaining concepts to my classmates and friends. So, I decided to pursue a career in teaching,” Shikha Gautam, who teaches the primary section at Apeejay School, Model Town, said.

Excerpts from an interview.

Tell us about your qualifications and how you joined Apeejay.

I completed my MCom and B.Ed. degrees from Innocent Hearts College at Guru Nanak Dev University. Additionally, I have also obtained The International Accreditation Service certification, where I scored LB in the exam. I have been teaching for more than five years. I began my professional career at DIPS School in Jalandhar where I taught for three years before joining Apeejay School, Model Town; this is my third year in the school.

What subjects do you teach?

I am an English teacher, specifically appointed as a thematic teacher at this school. Thematic teaching is an integrated approach where we follow different themes each month. For example, in April and May, the theme is ‘Me and My World’. In two months, we teach various subjects like English, Environmental Science, and languages through activities and examples related to the theme.

What is the benefit of this?

The benefit of this kind of learning is that it offers a practical and hands-on approach for the students. They can widen their thinking and actively participate by sharing their own experiences. It promotes brainstorming and engages the students more holistically.

As for the long-term benefits, this kind of learning helps students retain information better as they have practical experiences associated with the concepts. It enhances their understanding and allows them to apply their knowledge in real-life situations. This practical approach also encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in their personal and professional lives.

What is the importance of holistic development?

All Apeejay schools emphasise holistic development, which includes not only mental but also physical and emotional growth. Through hands-on activities, sports, yoga, and nature exploration, students develop their cognitive and motor skills. This holistic approach ensures a well-rounded development of the child.

What keeps you motivated?

Teaching small children requires a lot of energy, but my passion for teaching and my genuine interest in their growth keep me motivated. Seeing the enthusiasm and progress of my students energises me and reinforces my commitment to providing them with the best education. Teaching is a profession that requires constant motivation. I also focus on maintaining a positive mindset and a smile on my face. I remind myself of the importance of my role as an educator and the positive influence I can have on my students’ lives. Additionally, I engage in activities outside of teaching that help me relax and recharge like reading, spending time with family, and pursuing personal hobbies.

Why did you take teaching as a profession?

I have always been teaching primary students, specifically classes I to V. I enjoy working with young children as it allows me to make a significant impact on their early educational journey. Teaching has always been my calling, and I feel fortunate to be able to make a difference in the lives of young learners. It brings me joy and fulfillment to see my students grow and succeed.
