Journey Beneath the Earth: Uncovering the enigmatic Belum Caves

Explore the mystical beauty of Belum Caves

Nestled in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, Belum Caves is an extraordinary limestone cave system renowned for its vastness and unique formations, like its dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. These caves, the second longest in India after Meghalaya’s Krem Liat Prah, were carved over millions of years by water, creating intricate pathways, tunnels, and awe-inspiring chambers, making them a geological marvel. Designated a monument of national importance, Belum Caves stretch over three and a half kilometers, with a section of around 1.5 kilometers open to tourists.

One highlight within the caves is Patalganga, a point where the caves plunge to a depth of 46 meters. An underground stream flows here, creating a mesmerising sight as it moves across rocks before disappearing. With sinkholes formed by subterranean water flows, large caverns, and water tunnels, the caves provide a fascinating glimpse into natural geological processes and serve as a valuable study site for geologists. Outside, a towering Buddha statue commemorates the monks who once meditated within these hallowed spaces.

Exploring Belum Caves takes over an hour, and the walk can be challenging due to the high humidity inside. Though open year-round, the best time to visit is during the winter months, when temperatures are mild and more comfortable for exploration. The caves are accessible via public transportation or taxi from nearby cities, with Belum Village, located 106 km from Kurnool, as the closest hub. The nearest railway station is Tadipatri, 30 km away, while the nearest major airport is in Tirupati, about 250 km from Belum.

For those with a passion for natural wonders and ancient geology, Belum Caves offer an unforgettable underground journey through some of India’s most captivating limestone landscapes.
