Kickboxing is gaining popularity in Indian schools for a variety of reasons. The sport teaches students discipline and self-control. It also helps them to develop their focus and concentration.

Thereby, fostering students to develop confidence and self-esteem. It can teach them to persevere in the face of challenges as well.

Hence, a lot of schools have included this sport in their sports curricula including Apeejay School in Tanda Road, Jalandhar. Apeejay Education believes in holistic development and encourages its students to play sports. Meet one such athlete who has brought accolades to the school.

Drishti Aggarwal, a student of class VII, and a kickboxer champion at the district level has come a long way. What makes her achievement remarkable is that has only been six months since she picked up this sport. Over time, she has achieved 1 Gold medal in school games, followed by another gold medal in Khedan Watan Punjab Dia. She also participated and won a gold medal at the district level in the Federation of Kickboxing. Furthermore, she has been selected for upcoming zonals which are yet to take place in December.

In an impromptu interview, she talks about how her school coach inspired her to take up kickboxing.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m extremely outspoken with a strong passion for kickboxing and dancing. Not only have I won a Gold medal at the district-level championship. I am also been chosen to represent my district in the upcoming state-level competition.

Who inspired you to take up this sport?

My coach, Yadwinder sir. He told me that kickboxing teaches students discipline and self-control. This intrigued me and I decided to take it up. Little did I realise that I would be good at it and win competitions. But with his support and help, I have made great strides. His motivation gave me the confidence to participate at the district level and now I am all set to represent the school at the state-level championship.

What is your practice schedule?

I stay back at the school and practice with sir for an hour or so. But now that I have to train for the state-level championship, I will have to increase my training time.

Your reaction when you won.

I was beyond thrilled. I was filled with immense joy and pride. Considering that I’ve been practicing for a relatively short period, this accomplishment has given me a strong sense of self-satisfaction.

Challenges that you faced.

At the beginning of my kickboxing journey, I was unable to perform the sidekicks. I found it very difficult to manage it with my body weight. Now that I have been practicing regularly, I have improved. But I am not sure whether I will take up the sport professionally. At present, I’m content with pursuing the sport as a hobby.

How do you manage sports with your studies?

As mentioned above, my kickboxing practice is completed post-school hours. Once I am home, I take a break and spend time relaxing. I then complete my homework or study as needed. I have learnt the art of time management.

Advice to aspiring kickboxers.

It is very important to focus on your game while playing. Without dedication, you can’t achieve what you are seeking.
