Jago Grahak Jago, a consumer awareness programme launched by the Department of Food under the Government of India in 2005, has been working towards raising awareness among consumers through various mediums such as print, media advertisements, audio campaigns, and video campaigns. The programme is aimed at educating consumers about common shopping mistakes and encouraging them to make wise choices while shopping.

As consumers, we tend to overlook small details such as the manufacturing date and other crucial information while purchasing products. However, these details can have a significant impact on our health and well-being. The FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), established on 5 September 2008, plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and welfare of the people. The FSSAI label on food products indicates whether the operator is valid or not. It is essential to ensure that we purchase products that are certified by FSSAI to avoid health risks.

Let’s take an example to understand the importance of the Jago Grahak Jago program better.

One day, I went to the market with my mother and sister to buy groceries. While we were there, my sister insisted on getting a juice bottle, and my mother agreed. However, when my mother checked the manufacturing date, she discovered that it was way past the expiry date. She immediately informed the shopkeeper, who disregarded her concerns and threw the bottle back in the box he was selling.

My mother asked for another bottle, and while the shopkeeper went to the store, she checked the manufacturing date on all the bottles. To her shock, all the bottles were either outdated or had blurred labels marked by a marker. This experience made us realise the importance of being aware of the details while purchasing products and how it can impact our health.

It is vital to understand that as consumers, we have the power to demand quality products from the manufacturers. We can choose to purchase products that are certified by FSSAI to ensure that they are safe for consumption. Though quality products may be more expensive, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

In conclusion, Jago Grahak Jago has been a successful program that has helped raise awareness among consumers about the importance of being vigilant while purchasing products. By making wise choices, we can ensure that we stay healthy and avoid any health risks. Let’s take the first step towards a healthy and safe lifestyle by being conscious of the products we purchase.
