Ironic Beauty of Life

Published

on

I recently read a book called Fears and Trembling by the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard and came across a quote from him saying “Life is an ironic tragedy, it has to be lived forward but only makes sense in reverse.”It was like a spectacular line good to read and hear but took a little time to comprehend.

He was a philosopher who deeply dived into human experience. This quote offers a profound insight into how life should be approached, with courage, acceptance, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty and the tragedies of life. We often wonder why it always happens to us, but maybe it’s a path to our future self we would be thankful for or preparing us for a future we don’t see but will appreciate once we go through those events first.

Daily, we often judge situations based on immediate emotions, viewing challenges as setbacks. Rejections, failures, and the unexpected twists on our paths feel like obstacles, perhaps even unfair. But Kierkegaard suggests that only with time can we see the true impact of these events. The moments that may seem like tragedies in our present—disappointments that fill us with doubt—might later reveal themselves as essential parts of our journey, shaping us into stronger, wiser individuals.

Consider our lives as chapters in a story, each with unexpected turns, losses, and victories. In every story, the main characters face struggles that seem to be impossible to get through, yet each challenge is a step toward their ultimate growth. Similarly, every setback we encounter today may contribute to the character arc of our lives, an arc only fully appreciated by our future selves looking back. We may only understand the purpose behind our trials when we have the distance and perspective of time. As, steve jobs once said “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
