Koushiki Banerjee, a student of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC), believes adaptability and openness to learning can go a long way in securing professional success. Working at present as a creative copywriting intern at FCB India, the talented girl looks forward to gathering new experiences. The student, who pursued a PG Diploma is Advertising and Marketing Communications, tells us in an interview how her college made her ready for her professional journey.

Edited excerpts:

How did AIMC prepare you for the industry?

AIMC provided ample hands-on exposure to the industry through brand case studies, visual production, and more. The curriculum included practical learning, which helped me hone my skills, which is something I appreciate. It involved working on end-to-end creative campaigns from scratch. The fact that the faculty members are also part of the industry really helped as they gave us exclusive insights, which were very helpful.

Why do you think internship is important? How has it helped you?

My internship, in a way, has prepared me for the professional journey ahead. It helped me understand how the corporate industry actually works. I feel lucky to have an amazing team to work with. They have been guiding and teaching me and giving me new opportunities to learn the job on the go. Recently, I was able to bag an ad film for an automobile company and I am very excited to shoot it.

What kind of skills have you had to work on to crack campus placements?

Good communication skills, a positive attitude, confidence, and openness to learning are of paramount importance to crack a job. You must also learn how to multitask. At AIMC, I also learnt leadership skills and teamwork, which are coming in handy. Building a good portfolio and learning a little bit of everything really helped.

What are your key takeaways from your job interview experience?

You must build a good resume. Seek your professor’s guidance to learn how to structure your resume and what all to include or exclude. You also need to be very honest about how much you know. The recruiter must be able to see that you are open to learning and willing to adapt. At the same time, you must realise what kind of job drives or inspires you and work on your skills accordingly.
