In today’s world, the convenience of plastic bags has placed itself into daily life for millions around the globe. However, as we observe International Plastic Bag Free Day, it’s crucial to reflect on the environmental repercussions of our reliance on these ubiquitous items.

Here are a few ways how we can celebrate  international plastic bag free day:

1. Stop Using Plastic Bags The simplest and most impactful way to celebrate International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3rd is to completely avoid using plastic bags. Whether you’re at the grocery store, park, or a restaurant, commit to not using or requesting plastic bags. Bring your own reusable bags wherever you go and encourage others to do the same.

Explaining why one should stop using plastic bags, Sumit Pandey from Apeejay Stya University (ASU) said, “The urgency to halt the use of plastic bags stems from their detrimental impact on the environment. Marine animals mistake them for food, leading to ingestion and often death. Plastic bags contribute to the formation of large floating garbage patches in oceans, affecting marine biodiversity and disrupting fragile ecosystems. Moreover, the production of plastic bags consumes fossil fuels and emits greenhouse gases, further exacerbating climate change.”

The Apeejay student further highlighted, “Plastic bags offer undeniable convenience. They are lightweight, cheap to produce, and durable for carrying groceries and goods. However, these very qualities pose severe environmental challenges. Their durability means they persist in the environment long after their usefulness ends, causing harm to marine life and entering the food chain.”

2. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Embrace the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling to celebrate the day. Instead of discarding any plastic bags you already have, find creative ways to repurpose them. Use them as liners for trash bins, as makeshift lunch bags, or for storing items. Upcycling plastic bags can significantly reduce waste and give these items a new lease on life.

3. Practice Your Green Thumb Dedicate the day to Mother Nature by engaging in gardening activities. Planting a tree or some flowers not only beautifies your surroundings but also contributes positively to the environment. The plants you grow will help absorb carbon dioxide, improve air quality, and provide habitat for local wildlife.

4. Organise or Join a Community Cleanup Get involved in your community by organizing or participating in a local cleanup event. Gather friends, family, or neighbors and head to a nearby park, beach, or any public space to collect litter, especially plastic waste. This hands-on activity not only helps to reduce plastic pollution but also raises awareness about the impact of plastic bags on the environment.

5. Educate and Advocate Use International Plastic Bag Free Day as an opportunity to educate others about the environmental harm caused by plastic bags. Share information on social media, host a discussion group, or give a presentation at your local community center or school. Advocate for policies that ban or reduce the use of plastic bags in your community. By spreading awareness, you can inspire more people to make environmentally friendly choices.

Opining a similar thought, a student with Apeejay Stya University Harsh Sah pointed, “Storytelling and media coverage are one of the powerful tools. Highlighting success stories of individuals, communities, and businesses that have reduced plastic bag usage can inspire others. Working with local and national media to cover events and initiatives helps spread the message further.”

So on the International Plastic Bag Free Day, why not pledge to adopt the above-mentioned techniques that will not only reduce plastic waste but also fosters a greater sense of environmental responsibility.

As you must be aware, each small step contributes to a larger movement towards a healthier planet!
