Indian student spending abroad to reach $70 billion annually by 2025: Report

The Indian Student Mobility Report 2023 by Global Education Conclave projects that despite the annual growth in the number of Indian students pursuing higher education overseas, their expenditure abroad is expected to reach $70 billion by 2025.
In 2023, approximately 1.3 million Indian students are studying abroad. The leading states for outgoing students are Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, Punjab, and Maharashtra.
The report, titled Beyond Beds & Boundaries: Indian Student Mobility Report, 2023, provides valuable insights into the dynamics of Indian students seeking higher education abroad, focusing particularly on the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
The report underscores that countries like Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Ireland, Singapore, Russia, Philippines, France, and New Zealand have recently gained popularity as preferred destinations for overseas education. Traditionally, Indian students have gravitated towards countries like the US, Canada, UK, and Australia.
Punjab, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, and Maharashtra stand out as the top states in India in terms of students pursuing education abroad. The report indicates that each of these states contributes 12.5 per cent to the total number of students going abroad, followed by Gujarat, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu, each accounting for eight per cent. Karnataka follows at 6 per cent, while the combined contribution of other states amounts to 33 per cent.
