Shikha Aggarwal, a proud alumna of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park (1996 science batch), shares her nostalgic school experiences and the vital life lessons she learned along the way. In this delightful interview, she recounts her fun-filled, mischievous days at Apeejay Sheikh Sarai as it was known then and the alumna also reveals how her school shaped her into who she is today. She further offers insightful advice for today’s students, urging them to value school life and their bond with teachers.

Shikha, please tell us about your life presently?
Right now, I’m in a phase where I’m completely focused on supporting my children as they shape their future careers. I’m dedicated to being there for them full-time, helping guide them through their journey.

You said, you had many anecdotes from your school days to share?
Oh yes, I have a mischievous tale to tell! Like all young kids, we used to pass around chits in class to chat secretly. Once, during a Sanskrit class, the teacher caught one of my chits and got really furious with me! Everyone, except me, was laughing like crazy, and now when I recall it, I can’t help but laugh too. Those innocent, carefree days are unforgettable!

Hilarious indeed! But how did your school help you choose your path in life?
My school played a huge role in shaping my life. It taught us discipline and helped us become better humans. The morning assembly was something I truly cherished—it wasn’t just about gathering but about learning. The news section kept us updated, the thought of the day sparked wisdom, and the daily PT exercises made us realise the value of a strong body. The foundation laid by the school truly set the tone for my life.

What differences do you see between students of your time and now?
Students today seem to rely more on tuition. Back in our day, school life was not just about academics but also about enjoying every event. We studied hard in class, paid close attention, and were so focused that we didn’t need extra tuition. School was the best phase of our lives, where we learned and had fun at the same time. We were so happy going to school everyday. We would never miss a single day.

What problems do you feel current students face, and advice on the same?
One major issue students face is substance abuse, which is a path to complete ruin. My advice would be for parents to spend more time with their children and educate them about the dangers. Another concern is that the internet has caused interpersonal relationships to suffer. Families should make an effort to laugh, enjoy, and spend quality time together every day. Students must speak and spend time daily with their parents and vice versa.

Tell us about your school days and bond with teachers?
I shared an incredible bond with my teachers. Apeejay Sheikh Sarai was outstanding in terms of education, and our teachers were our real-life mentors. I am forever grateful to all of them. In fact, I’m still in touch with over 10 teachers from my time there. The guidance they provided truly made a lasting impact on me.
