Her daughter, Shvanya Grover, who is in KG recently participated in the Annual Appreciation Day that Apeejay School, Pitampura celebrated. Her proud mother, Malvika clapped as her daughter moved with the tune of the music and hula hoops.

“It was such a proud moment for me. My daughter was so excited to be part of this function. She spent hours on end for over a month practicing with the hoop. She was scared that she might drop it on D-day. But came out with flying colours,” Malvika said.

In a candid interview, Malvika who is a Primary Government teacher with an MCD School in Sahadara talks about her daughter’s teachers among other things.

How is your daughter doing now that she is attending school?

I would call these toddlers the COVID-19 batch. Unfortunately, due to the present pandemic, these kids hardly managed to attend play/preschool. So yes, there were bound to the small niggles when the classes went offline, to begin with. But her present teacher, Monica ma’am, is very good. She had managed to handle all the students well and my daughter likes going to school now.

Was it tough when the classes were online?

Have you ever tried to make a three-year-old sit still in one place for three hours? You should try it and then you will understand (laughs). Handling kids this age is a full-time job and I am working! But during Covid, things were easier. Both of us were at home. I was able to help her get through these classes. Also, my daughter learnt so many new things during online classes.

Why did you choose Apeejay School, Pitampura?

I have been married into a business family and they wanted Shivanya go to schools like Bal Bharati Public School in Pitampura or even Junior DPS. I was the only one in the entire family who had a different take. Since I am a Pitampura alumna, I wanted my daughter to study here. As luck would have it, she didn’t get admission anywhere. She was destined to study here; it was God’s wish.

You are an alumna yourself. What was your experience of studying here?

I think things were done differently back then. But maybe my perspective can be coloured since I am an introvert. I remember that the focus was more on classroom teaching and while I used to participate in annual functions and other sporting events that were held, I kept to myself. Also, I was under the impression that Apeejay only took students whose parents were in the service sector. This is not the case since my husband is a businessman.

“Good education is a must for each child; it plays a huge role in a person’s life. Good healthy education in a healthy environment is what I want for Shivanya”

What changes have you seen in the school?

To be very honest things were better when I was in school. But then I am sure people will say that I am biased. Each child enjoys his/her time in school – my daughter is having fun in school. And if asked 20 years later, she will say her time was better. But overall the school has gone places. It won several accolades – academically and in extracurricular activities. Some students have had personal growth as well. There is a lot of talent here. The best part is that they get the opportunity to explore it and excel in it.

Also, it is wrong to compare times. Things are done differently today and it is perfectly fine to do so. One has to keep up with changing times.

A lesson you want your daughter to learn.

When I look at my upbringing and the struggle my parents went through to ensure that I studied in a school like Apeejay, I would want my daughter to be financially independent even though she is born into a business-class family. I don’t want her to grow up with the concept of spending money without having to earn the same. She should have an identity of her own. Good education is a must for each child; it plays a huge role in a person’s life. Good healthy education in a healthy environment is what I want for Shivanya.
