More than 72,000 students — including both Indians and foreign citizens — are currently enrolled in various online programmes being offered by universities in India.

Interestingly, there has been a 179% jump from last year’s tally of nearly 25,905 students, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar has stated.

The UGC is likely to announce the National Digital University soon. And, as the Chairman has highlighted that there has been a steady rise in enrollments for online courses, this might further pick up once the commission launches its National Digital University.

“Online programmes provide a window of opportunity to many students who are unable to join physically in a college or university,” said Kumar. He further added that we need to take advantage of modern digital technologies to prepare engaging digital content and reach out to students via the internet at an affordable cost. This will help students become skillful and knowledgeable.
