It is now more important than ever to impart sustainability to the youngest of our species when the environmental challenges thrown our way are so daunting. Imagine a class full of high-pitched voices from children, overflowing into the soft buzz of nature, and picture small hands kneading soil while planting seeds that will bloom simultaneously with their understanding of how to care for our Earth. This is an emotional realisation for many preschools today, where environmental education is taking its roots for a generation who will love and care for our planet.

State-of-the-art preschools like Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld, GK-II, are coming up with innovative measures to make little minds think of going green. “Children are born naturalists. They explore the world with all of their senses, experiment in the environment, and communicate their discoveries to those around them. By starting as early as preschool, environmental education will shape the mindset of your children and make them environmentally aware and responsible. That will inspire them to make smart choices and good decisions. And that is a kind of generation we need,” Ms Komal Nathani, School Head, Apeejay Rhythms Kinderworld, GK-II stated.

One of the most hands-on approaches to teaching sustainability to young children can be through direct activities such as planting trees and gardens. Planting seeds, watering them, and watching them grow teaches the life cycles of plants and the need to care for living things. All this practical approach does is make learning fun, laying a sense of responsibility with a feeling of accomplishment.

Storytelling and Creative Play

Storytelling and creative play represent another pair of strong tools for the delivery of environmental education. Stories about animals, plants, and ecosystems will show the child how life on Earth relates. Creative play, from building miniature ecosystems to creating pieces of art out of recyclable materials, serves as a notably memorable way to reinforce this learning.

In particular, environmental books and stories can be quite effective. Characters who care for the environment model behaviours young readers can imitate in their lives. Teachers and parents can use stories to involve children in discussing environmental issues and how they can be solved.

The Role of Educators and Parents

Parents can easily transfer these lessons into the home environment by engaging their children in everyday sustainable practices. Some easy acts, such as recycling, composting, and energy-saving, can show a child how their choices are affecting the environment. Other family activities include hiking, camping, or even visiting a nature reserve, whereby a greater appreciation for the natural environment is in store.

“Nature is our treasure, let’s save it. Clean up the earth, it’s the only home we have. Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed. Save the environment, save yourself,” Ms Nathani said in conclusion.
