Honouring mothers and their unconditional love: A special school assembly

Napoleon Bonaparte once remarked, “Give me good mothers and I shall give you a good nation,” while acknowledging the vital role of mothers in nation-building. On this special occasion of Mother’s Day, I, Aanya Mahajan, feel honoured to express my thoughts on the significance of mothers.

The word “mother” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Matri,” and in our ancient scriptures, mothers are spoken of in high regard and revered like gods. Mothers make our lives beautiful, colourful, and meaningful. They teach us righteousness and how to uphold our principles. The bond between a mother and child is sacred and special. As mentioned in the religious text Skanda Purana , “There is no shade like a mother. No shelter, no protector like a mother. There is no ever-giving fountain of life in the world like a mother.”

Mothers are indeed God’s most precious gift to us. Their love is immeasurable and unconditional. They are not only our friends but also our teachers, spiritual guides, and companions. To honour the countless contributions of our mothers, International Mother’s Day is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. Schools, colleges, and organisations conduct numerous activities to celebrate this day.

In our school, we participated in various activities like Mother’s Day card making, creative writing, and poem writing, which culminated in this special assembly. On this day, let us seek God’s blessings for our mothers and all the mother-like figures in our lives, such as our teachers and grandmothers, who continue to nurture us. Let us come together to make this day special for them.

I would like to end with the lines from a poem I wrote for my mother:

Bright as the sun, harbinger of light,

Calm as the moon, reflector of light.

My mother is my universe,

Beautiful and bright.

Of all the special joys in life,

The big ones and the small;

My mother’s love and tenderness Is the greatest of them all.

She is my first teacher; she is my best friend,

One half she is, the other I.

She is my spiritual guide,

One who propels me to unscaled heights.

I hope you all celebrated a wonderful Mother’s Day.
