Allow your child to express his/her emotions, whether it’s anger, love, happiness, anxiety, or sadness. When your child is angry, avoid lecturing him/her at that moment. Instead, simply listen to children and let them release their anger through screaming or shouting if necessary. If your child is sad, let him/her cry and express his/her sadness. Remember, children are human beings too, and they experience emotions just like adults do. Every emotion needs an outlet, and by providing a safe space at home for your children to express themselves, they won’t feel the need to seek unhealthy outlets outside.
Now, the question arises, ‘How to handle your child’s anger if you shouldn’t intervene while they are angry?’
After your child has let out his/her anger, they will automatically become calm and peaceful after some time. Take this opportunity to sit with your child and talk about why they were angry. If the reason for their anger was genuine, try to avoid putting your child in that situation again. However, if your child was in the wrong, use real-life examples to help them understand that their behaviour was not appropriate. You can even share your own experiences of making mistakes and how your parents guided you through them. It’s important not to present yourself as a perfect, infallible figure to your child, but rather as someone who also learned from their mistakes with the help of their own parents. By doing so, your child will feel happier and more satisfied, knowing that it’s okay to make mistakes as long as they learn from them, just like you did. This approach will earn you more respect from your child.

Similarly, when your child wants to hug you, embrace them tightly and listen attentively. Sometimes, children casually discuss important things, and by actively listening, you can gain insight into what’s happening in their lives. Understanding a child’s emotions and experiences is crucial for every parent. Remember, emotions are vital, so allow them to flow naturally because life is made up of various emotions, and each one is important.
