Education Ministry confirms CUET UG not tied to CBSE syllabus

The Ministry of Education has clarified that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG is not designed around the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus. In a written response to Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar, affirmed that CUET aims to assess students from various Boards on an equal basis.

Starting from the academic year 2022-23, CUET will be utilised for admission to central universities, with the primary goal of alleviating the burden on students, universities, and the education system as a whole. The test syllabus is constructed to encompass a general understanding of subjects at the class XII level, ensuring that students from different Boards are evaluated fairly.

Moreover, Sarkar denied there was any proposal to scrap any school Board and recognise only one from which students can take class XII exams before appearing for the CUET.

The CUET UG was made compulsory in 2022 for admission to various universities including the University of Delhi. Last year, 12.5 lakh students had registered for the exam while over 11.11 lakh candidates appeared for the second edition of the entrance exam.
