Let’s find out the truth about sneezing

That familiar tickle in your throat and nose signals an impending sneeze, leaving you wondering about its impact on your heart. So, does your heart stop or skip a beat? Let’s demystify the sneezing myth and delve into the science behind this common bodily function.

Contrary to popular belief, your heart does not stop when you sneeze. The sensation of a skipped beat likely results from a momentary change in pressure during the sneezing process. As you inhale before sneezing, chest pressure rises, and upon exhaling, it drops. While this may briefly affect your heartbeat’s rhythm, it doesn’t halt the heart’s beating. The misconception arises from the belief in a fixed heart rate, which is also untrue. For a sneeze to be considered “heart-stopping,” the heart would need to stop for at least three seconds, an occurrence beyond a sneeze’s capability.

This rare phenomenon known as sneeze syncope involves a significant drop in heart rate and blood pressure during a sneeze, potentially causing dizziness or fainting. However, this occurrence is rare and often attributed to factors like medication or an underlying medical condition rather than the act of sneezing itself.

In fact, attempting to suppress a sneeze is discouraged. Sneezes are forceful, and inhibiting them increases pressure in the chest and nasal passages, potentially causing harm to blood vessels in the eyes, nose, or eardrums.

While sneezing, runny noses, and sniffles are usually harmless, persistent symptoms warrant attention. If concerns arise, consult your primary care physician, especially if accompanied by other worrisome symptoms. Stay informed, practice good hygiene, and debunk sneezing myths for a healthier, happier you.
