You must have heard about the evergreen slogan: Jai Jawan! Jai Kisaan! Meet the quiet hero who gave this slogan and roared for India’s freedom in a very crucial stage of the nation’s development. He is none other than Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, a name that resonates with humility and determination, was a remarkable figure in India’s history. Born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, he emerged as a fervent freedom fighter and later assumed the role of India’s second Prime Minister after the demise of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru.

Shastri ji’s journey is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the nation’s welfare. In this article, we delve into five key moments from his career that define his legacy as a freedom fighter and Prime Minister.

Shastri ji was born into a modest family, which instilled in him values of simplicity and hard work. His early years were marked by a deep commitment to education and an emerging awareness of the injustices of British colonial rule.

He plunged into the freedom struggle during his college days and participated in various movements against the British Raj. His passion for India’s independence led him to join Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement, where he endured arrests and imprisonment but remained resolute in his resolve for a free India.

Lal Bahadur Shastri’s leadership abilities were evident when he was appointed as the Prime Minister of India in 1964. It was a time of turmoil, with India grappling with food shortages and the aftermath of a war with China.

Shastri’s tenure as Prime Minister saw a series of key decisions, including the famous slogan: Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, which emphasised the importance of both the armed forces and farmers. Under his leadership, India successfully navigated these challenges and emerged stronger.

One of Shastri’s defining moments as Prime Minister was his role in the Tashkent Agreement in 1966. Following the India-Pakistan war of 1965, Shastri demonstrated a commitment to peace by engaging in talks with Pakistani President Ayub Khan.

The Tashkent Agreement was a significant step towards de-escalation and normalisation of relations between the two countries. Sadly, Shastri’s untimely demise occurred shortly after the agreement was signed, leaving a legacy of peace and reconciliation.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Shastri championed the White Revolution, a movement aimed at transforming India’s dairy industry. He realised that the development of the dairy sector was crucial to alleviating poverty and improving the lives of millions of rural Indians.

His call for an increase in milk production led to the successful implementation of Operation Flood, which significantly boosted dairy farming and made India one of the world’s largest milk producers. Shastri’s vision for a self-reliant and prosperous India extended to every corner of the nation.

Lal Bahadur Shastri left an indelible mark on India’s history with his simplicity, integrity, and dedication. His famous declaration, “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” remains etched in the nation’s memory as a tribute to the soldiers and farmers who toil for the country.

His commitment to the welfare of the common man and his dedication to the principles of Gandhian non-violence and self-sufficiency continue to inspire generations. Shastri’s legacy serves as a reminder that true leadership lies in humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the people.

From his early days as a freedom fighter to his role as Prime Minister, he remained committed to the principles of truth, simplicity, and service to the nation. His legacy lives on in the hearts of Indians, serving as a reminder of the values that define a true leader.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, the quiet hero who roared for India’s freedom and progress, continues to inspire and guide the nation towards a brighter future. Let us learn from the eternal leader’s life and contribute our share in making India and the world a happier, kinder station for all.
