In today’s fast-paced world, effective communication skills are vital for students. While verbal communication is important, body language also plays a significant role in how one thinks, acts, and reacts. For students, mastering positive body language can contribute to their personal and academic growth as well as have a profound impact on their future.
To explain it simply, body language refers to the non-verbal cues we use to express ourselves, including facial expressions, gestures, posture, and eye contact. It is a powerful tool that can enhance or undermine our verbal messages. According to Ms Prashansa Hans, PGT Psychology and School Counsellor at Apeejay School, Faridabad Sector 15, “Body language forms the unspoken part of communication that we use to reveal our true feelings and deliver greater impact to our message. Surprisingly, a person can say one thing and mean something entirely different. So, through someone’s gestures, facial expressions, and posture, you can read how a person is truly feeling.”
By paying attention to these, students can further strengthen their communication skills, build confidence, and establish meaningful connections with others. Let’s explore practical tips for adopting a positive body language. Read on.
Keep Head Held high: Maintaining good posture conveys confidence and attentiveness. Sit or stand up straight, with your shoulders relaxed and your head held high. Avoid slouching, as it can project disinterest or lack of confidence.
Focus on Facial Expressions: Smiling is a universal language that instantly creates a positive impression. It conveys friendliness, approachability, and enthusiasm. Therefore, ensure to maintain eye contact while engaging in conversations to show interest and build rapport with others.
Know the Gestures: Thoughtful hand gestures can add depth and emphasis to your communication. Use them sparingly and purposefully to complement your words and convey your message effectively. Avoid fidgeting or excessive gestures, as they can be distracting.
Listen Actively: Displaying attentive body language while listening to others is crucial. Face the person you’re speaking with, nod in agreement, and maintain eye contact. These actions demonstrate respect and interest, encouraging open and effective communication.
Respect Personal Space: Be mindful of others’ boundaries and maintain an appropriate distance during interactions. Invading personal space can make others feel uncomfortable or threatened.
Embrace Confident Movement: How you move in physical space also reflects your confidence. Walk with purpose, exhibiting a calm and confident stride. Avoid rushing or slumping while walking, as it can give off an impression of uncertainty.
As per Ms Hans, “Adopting a positive body language can lead to success. In a classroom setting, it has the ability to motivate, inspire and engage others. So, gestures such as smiling, nodding and maintaining eye contact can make a student appear more approachable and interested.”
Sharing her view on the subject, Ms Bhavya Arora, School Counsellor and Psychology Facilitator (Diploma Programme) at Apeejay School International (ASI), Panchsheel Park says, “To display a positive body language, it is necessary for students to feel confident from within too since both of these are inter-related. With this, adopting a healthy mindset and positive self-talk is essential for them.”
Besides, body language is contagious, according to the expert. It creates an atmosphere around a person and others observe it. “The ability to develop meaningful relationships and sustain them is also dependent on body language. For instance, if a child comes home and begins to tell about his/her day to a parent, gestures like eye contact and active listening from the parent’s side can play a key role in creating a greater bond.”
Therefore, body language can pave the way for success in personal and professional spheres. By adopting these tips outlined, students can develop stronger interpersonal relationships, excel academically, and create a solid foundation for a promising future. Remember, confidence and attentiveness in your non-verbal cues will empower you to convey your thoughts effectively and leave a positive impression on those around you.
