In today’s technologically driven world, mobile games have become a pervasive form of entertainment among children and teenagers. While some level of gaming can be harmless and even beneficial, excessive mobile game addiction can have severe consequences for your child’s physical and mental well-being. Let’s explore the causes of mobile game addiction, its impact on children, and valuable insights on preventing as well as managing this issue to ensure your child’s healthy development.

As per Anita Singh, the mother of Sashmith Kumar, who is studying at Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, “Mobile game addiction is not a casual thing; it’s a powerful and perilous habit that can damage students’ lives and hinder them from reaching their full potential. While mobile game addiction may sound frightening, it’s not insurmountably dangerous or something to be excessively frightened of. It can be managed well through strong willpower, perseverance, and a touch of discipline.”

  1. Instant gratification: Mobile games offer immediate rewards, triggering the release of dopamine in the brain, which reinforces the desire to play repeatedly to experience the same pleasure.
  2. Escapism: Children may turn to mobile games as a way to escape from real-world problems, stress, or boredom, leading to an unhealthy reliance on virtual environments.
  3. Social connectivity: Online mobile games often incorporate social elements, fostering a sense of belonging and competition, which can become addictive for some children seeking validation and recognition.
  4. Peer pressure: In a digital era, children may feel compelled to play mobile games to fit in with their friends or peer groups.
  1. Decline in academic performance: Excessive gaming can lead to poor academic performance as children may prioritise gaming over schoolwork and studying.
  2. Physical health issues: Prolonged mobile gaming can cause posture problems, eye strain, sleep disturbances, and a sedentary lifestyle, contributing to obesity and other health concerns.
  3. Social isolation: As mobile game addiction intensifies, children may withdraw from real-life interactions, leading to social isolation and difficulty in forming meaningful relationships.
  4. Emotional distress: Gaming addiction can lead to mood swings, irritability, and anxiety when access to games is restricted.

  1. Set clear boundaries: Establish strict rules regarding screen time and game usage. Limit gaming hours to appropriate and balanced intervals.

According to Shelly Aggarwal, mother of Bhavesh Aggarwal, who is studying at Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar, “Parenting in the digitised era is the most challenging task. Parents need to monitor their child’s screen time, and it is even more important to involve them in recreational activities for their cognitive development. We, as parents, need to support and guide our children in order to avoid the aftermath of mobile addiction.”

  1. Engage in alternative activities: Encourage your child to participate in extracurricular activities, sports, and hobbies that promote social interaction and overall well-being.

Sharing her thoughts, Parul Verma, mother of Apeejay School Noida student Chhavi Verma, highlights, “Children should be encouraged to limit their use of mobile phones and engage in outdoor games for their overall development and well-being. While mobile phones offer access to information and communication, excessive screen time can lead to various issues, including reduced physical activity, social isolation, and even negative effects on mental health. On the other hand, outdoor games not only provide a fun way to exercise but also foster social skills, teamwork, and creativity. Playing outside also exposes children to nature, fresh air, and sunlight, which are essential for their physical and emotional growth. Encouraging children to strike a balance between technology use and outdoor play will help them lead a healthier and
well-rounded life.”

  1. Monitor content: Be aware of the games your child plays. Choose age-appropriate and educational games that encourage creativity and problem-solving.
  2. Open communication: Foster an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their gaming habits and emotions. Encourage them to express their feelings without fear of judgment.

In summary, mobile game addiction is a growing concern among children, with far-reaching consequences on their physical, emotional, and social development. Therefore, as parents, it is essential to understand the causes behind this addiction and take proactive steps to prevent it negative impact on growing children
