Just as we celebrate Grandparents Day and Siblings Day, we cannot overlook the most integral figures in our lives — parents. Every year on June 1, the world comes together to celebrate the Global Day of Parents, a day dedicated to honouring the pivotal role that parents play in nurturing and raising children.
This year, the theme “The Promise of Playful Parenting” highlights the transformative power of play in building stronger, healthier, and more resilient families. Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet challenging adventures one can embark on. It’s filled with laughter, learning, and love. But how can parents ensure that they create a joyful and nurturing environment for their children?
As we delve into playful parenting, let’s explore the unexplored arenas of ‘making every moment with a child happy and fulfilling!
Embrace Playfulness
Playing indoor/outdoor games is the easiest yet one of the best ways to bond with your child and create joy. Whether it’s a game of hide-and-seek, building a fort with pillows, or a dance-off in the living room, playtime fosters connection and happiness. To make it easier for you, you can create a ‘Play Jar’ filled with fun activity ideas. Each day, let your child pick an activity from the jar. This adds an element of surprise and keeps playtime exciting.

Communication is the Key
Communication sure is the key that unlocks doors to many hidden places. Make sure to have open communication with your child and let them express what they feel. Make time for heart-to-heart conversations, whether it’s during dinner or a walk in the park. Want to make it more interesting? Implement a ‘Rose, Thorn, and Bud’ routine at the end of the day. Here, each family member shares a rose (a good thing that happened), a thorn (a challenge they faced), and a bud (something they’re looking forward to).
Celebrate Achievements
Children are big, big observers. They will come out the way you treat them. Whether your child has gained a ‘star’ remark in his notebook or has won the state-level sports championship, CELEBRATE!
Prioritise one-on-time
Spending quality one-on-one time with each child helps to strengthen your relationships. This can be as simple as a special breakfast date, a walk in the park, or a shared hobby.
Imagination beyond skies: Let them soar high
Encouraging creativity helps children develop problem-solving skills and self-expression. Provide them with art supplies, musical instruments, or building blocks, and watch their imagination flourish.
Engage in educational activities
Learning together can be fun and fulfilling. Explore educational games, visit museums, or simply read books together. This not only enhances knowledge but also strengthens your bond, spreading positivity all around.

“Parenting is a dynamic journey that evolves alongside the growth of your child. Each age group presents unique challenges and demands, requiring parents to adapt their approach accordingly. It’s crucial for parents, especially those with more than one child, to resist the temptation of comparison and instead focus on understanding each child’s individual needs,” says Ms Dharini Sahni, PGT Psychology & School Counselor at Apeejay School, Pitampura.
Before embarking on the path of ‘happy parenting,’ it’s essential to equip oneself with knowledge and education. “Managing two children simultaneously demands a nuanced approach tailored to each child’s temperament and personality,” the educator added.
Social comparison, even within siblings, should be discouraged as it can hinder the natural development of their relationship. While playful parenting is encouraged, it’s important to maintain boundaries and consistency.
Neglecting parental responsibilities can have detrimental effects on a child’s self-esteem and decision-making abilities. On this Global Day of Parents 2024, try understanding your child’s preferred modality of learning, whether auditory, kinesthetic, or visual, to allow for effective communication and engagement.
Avoid seeking one-size-fits-all parenting advice and prioritize maintaining your identity as a parent. Children learn by observing, so be self-assured and confident in your parenting abilities. Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth and connection within the parent-child relationship.”
To make it simpler for parents, Ms Sahni shared some tips
• Combine your preferences with your child’s to plan quality activities together.
• Create a non-judgmental environment to help them express their emotions.
• Don’t shy away from sharing your mistakes and life experiences, including failures.
• Focus on quality over quantity. Even brief, honest, and warm interactions can have a significant positive impact, regardless of being a working parent.
Regardless of the age gap between you and your child, always remember that it’s essential to maintain open communication with them today, tomorrow, and always. Every smile, every hug, and every shared moment contributes to a happier, healthier family.
