For Aishpreet, a Class XI Commerce student at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, basketball has been much more than a sport—it’s been a journey of self-discovery. Having studied at the school since nursery, she has grown up on its playgrounds, learning lessons of teamwork, discipline, and resilience that extend far beyond the basketball court.
Read edited excerpts:
When did you first start playing basketball, and what drew you to the game?
I started playing when I was in Class 4. No one really pushed me into it, it was completely my choice. I used to watch my seniors play and loved how energetic and coordinated they were on the court. Their teamwork fascinated me, and one day, I just decided to give it a try. What began as curiosity soon turned into a passion.
You’ve been part of the school team for several years. How has the experience shaped you?
It has shaped me in many ways. I play as a defender, which demands speed, strength, and focus. Over time, my game and confidence have both improved. Earlier, our school team rarely qualified for district-level matches, but this year, we all made it together and that was a proud moment for me. The support from my teachers and teammates helped me overcome nervousness and stay calm under pressure.
How do you balance studies and sports?
It’s challenging but manageable. At first, I struggled to give equal time to both, but now I’ve learned how to prioritise. My teachers understand my training schedules and always motivate me to excel in both academics and sports.
What has been your biggest learning from basketball?
Teamwork. You can’t win a match alone. If one player tries to do everything, the team loses balance. Success only comes when everyone coordinates and trusts each other.
Who inspires you the most?
My father. He was a state-level hockey and football player, and he’s always encouraged me to pursue sports. He says I’ve inherited his passion for athletics. He’s also the reason I dream of becoming a police officer in Australia one day. I admire their discipline and the pride they carry in their work, and since my father lives there, I want to fulfill his dream too.
What do you enjoy doing beyond sports?
I’m quite creative! I love gardening, sketching, painting, and crafting. These hobbies help me unwind after a busy day. My favourite subject is Economics, and I chose Commerce because I’m interested in understanding business and finance. It’ll also help me later in managing my responsibilities well.
