He is, at present, in Class XII at Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, and pursuing the Commerce stream. Interestingly, he has not yet decided exactly what he wants to pursue and is still exploring his options. And the same goes for basketball, a sport that he is playing at the state level. While he may not have any fixed future goals in the sport, he has not stopped training and continues to work on improving his game. Meet Shaurya Kapasiya.

In a candid interview, he shares an achievement that remains especially memorable for him, among other things.

When did you first begin playing basketball, and what drew you to the sport?

I started playing basketball when I was in Class X. Initially, I played the sport at school just for fun, but after some time, it became my favourite sport. What attracted me most were the precious moments shared by a team and the dynamic nature of the game. Watching players who were better than me also motivated me to train consistently and improve my skills.

How did you progress from playing at school to competing at the state level?

After training for a year, I appeared for the trials at the NBA Basketball School in Noida and was selected. It was an important turning point in my journey. The regular practice and training I received there helped me improve as a player and eventually reach the state level.

What does your training routine look like, especially while managing Class XII studies?

Nowadays, my routine mainly involves self-training. Since I am in Class XII, my studies do not allow me to attend regular practice sessions. However, I continue to train by myself regularly while managing my academics.

What challenges have you faced as a student-athlete, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge I have faced as a student-athlete is balancing sports and studies. Giving enough time and attention to both can be difficult. Still, I believe that if the balance is managed correctly and one remains disciplined, anything can be achieved.

Is there a particular match or achievement that remains especially memorable for you? Why?

My most memorable achievement was being selected to represent India at the Asia Pacific Cup in Singapore. Unfortunately, I could not participate because I had to concentrate on my Class XII studies. Even though I could not attend the tournament, the selection remains a special achievement for me.

How have your school, coaches, and family supported your journey as a basketball player?

My family has supported me throughout my basketball journey. Their encouragement has helped me continue working hard, and I hope they will keep supporting me in the future as I try to become both a better player and a better person.

Advice to other students who wish to pursue sports seriously.

My advice to students who wish to pursue sports seriously is to first have the support of their families. After that, they need an unwavering will to follow their dreams and work as hard as possible. If they remain dedicated, great things can happen. I strongly believe that obsession beats talent every time.
