Balancing academics and sports isn’t easy, but for Sukhmani Deol, a Class XII Commerce student at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, it’s all about passion and discipline. Having picked up the basketball in her early school years, she has grown into a confident defender who values teamwork and self-belief over mere victories. In this conversation, she shares her journey, the lessons learnt, and dreams for the future.

When did you first start playing basketball? What drew you to the game?
I began playing basketball in Class IV or V when our school got a new basketball coach. He encouraged girls to train right from day one, and that’s how my interest in the game started. His energy and motivation inspired me to continue playing.

What position do you usually play, and what skills does it demand?
I mostly play in the defense position. It requires quick speed, focus, and strong control over the ball. You have to keep moving, dribbling, and watching your opponent carefully — one second of distraction can change the game.

How do you handle pressure during close matches?
For me, it’s not just about winning. My coach always says, “Winning doesn’t matter unless you enjoy the game.” That advice has stayed with me. I focus on giving my best, supporting my teammates, and enjoying every moment on the court.

What makes a strong basketball team?
Coordination and acceptance are key components of a successful basketball team. Every player has strengths and weaknesses. The key is to respect that and work together rather than argue. A united team always performs better.

How do you balance studies with sports practice?
During tournaments, our school provides half-day or full-day practice sessions. Our teachers are very supportive — they help us catch up with lessons and even conduct extra classes when we miss school due to matches.

What are your plans for the future — will basketball continue to be part of it?
Definitely! If I get the opportunity, I would love to pursue basketball further. Alongside that, I plan to study for Chartered Accountancy or start my own business. I’m interested in launching a clothing brand that brings back traditional styles and cultural elements — something elegant yet rooted in our heritage.
