The National Service Scheme (NSS) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) in Gurugram recently organised an engaging extempore competition. The focus was on different trending topics related to the General Election 2024 in India. The session was part of the ongoing efforts under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme initiated by the Election Commission of India. The primary goal of this event was to foster a deeper understanding and generate discourse among the youth regarding the multifaceted aspects of elections and their significant impact on democratic governance.

The event held within the campus drew a participative crowd of students from various departments. Students from diverse academic backgrounds took part in the event, which allowed for a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives on the given topics.

Some of the topics discussed included: Role of Youth in Development, Youth and Election in India, Casteism and Election, Casteism, Communalism, and Election,   Social Media and General Election,  Corruption and Election, Aspirations of Youth during Election, and so on.

The participants were evaluated based on their clarity of thought, content relevance, presentation skills, and their ability to engage the audience. The judges consisted of faculty members from various departments who brought a wealth of knowledge and impartiality to the assessment process.

The first position in the extempore competition was grabbed by Komal Kasana, BSc BEd, School of Education. The second and the third positions were bagged by students from B Tech CSE, School of Engineering & Technology  Amit Jha and Mayank respectively. The fourth position was given to Preeti, BBA student with the School of Management Sciences.

The Extempore competition successfully illuminated the important role that educated youth play in the democratic process and highlighted the complex issues that influence elections in India. By discussing these topics, students demonstrated an impressive level of awareness and responsibility towards their roles as informed citizens.

The event not only educated the participants but also the audience, creating a ripple effect of awareness that we hope will translate into increased electoral participation and a more informed voter base. NSS ASU remains committed to nurturing responsible and active participation in national processes among students.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Vijay Kumar, Programme Coordinator, NSS, ASU.
